We live in the future: 10 beauty gadgets that promise to make our life easier

We've talked about coughing up cash for effective skincare and quality makeup but after rounding up five must-try beauty gadgets, we realized that there's more to beauty than simply investing in products. The gadgets we've tried from Glamcor, Suesh, and Crane have really made such a difference in our beauty routines (and inspired a Hollywood mirror DIY!) that we've decided to take a look at what else is out there. Read on to see what's on our current gadget wishlist!

SKINCARE

Most releases of beauty gadgets are often geared towards skincare, the most common being the cleansing brushes or facial massagers. These aid in exfoliating during the cleansing process, and may even have different brush attachments. If the brush has a vibrating option, it can even be used as a facial massager. So far, Liz has tried the Mary Kay Invigorate Cleansing Brush and the Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush, which both did wonders for helping her get rid of blackheads!

Clinique now also has different brush heads for applying skincare and foundation. Pretty cool, no? The skincare applicator, with a ridged metal surface, is already available locally. As far as we know the foundation head is not yet in stores but we will let you know when it is.

At Sephora PH, there's a brand called Foreo that is all about skincare devices. Aside from the usual cleansing brushes (they have specialized ones for different skin types), they also have a facial massager specific to the eye area. The Iris Eye Massager is designed with their Alternating T-Sonic technology, and promises to decrease the appearance of puffiness, dark eye circles and even fine lines. It also claims to help you skin absorb care products better.

Have you ever wondered if your skin is getting enough moisture to stay healthy and well-balanced? Dry and oily-skinned gals alike can make good use of the Digital Skin Moisture Analyzer we found from Kaymu.ph. It's similar to skin analysis machines used by skincare companies for their promotions. This will help you address your skin concerns more thoroughly, and even inform you how well your care products are performing.

You add a more professional touch to at-home facials with the Revitalize Microdermabrasion Kit from Aesthetique Solutions. It's like a home version of the diamond peel services offered at spas/skincare centers that remove acne scars and discoloration.

Ever heard of using light and color therapy to treat your skin concerns? That's what the interesting new technology behind the Skin Inc Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light on Sephora PH promises. Use it with a water-based serum or mask to boost absorption, and enjoy other benefits like skin cell repair, skin brightening, and skin soothing.

HAIR

The Dyson Supersonic Dryer made its rounds on the Internet early this year as it immediately captivated us with its weird shape. Yes, this sci-fi dryer is made by Dyson as in the electric fan and vacuum cleaner manufacturer! It's made with a powerful motor that promises to dry hair faster with much less of the noise. It retails for 299 GBP (yikes).

MAKEUP

What's a beauty gadget article without makeup tools? First up is the vibrating mascaras, wherein the brushes do most of the work for you. Maybelline released some in 2009 but I'm not sure if they're still available. I did find the Estee Lauder TurboLash All Effects Motion Mascara on the brand's website though. Volume, curl, length, and separation is achieved with the vibrating LashSonic Brush!

Airbrush makeup kits are no longer just for the pros. Brands now offer the option of getting a starter kit or a deluxe/pro kit. You can find both options on BeautyMNL, which carries the Glambox brand. Kits include a compressor, gun, adaptor, airbrush holder, airhose, and other accessories with a bonus of some liquid makeup.

Another airbrush brand available locally is Beauty HD. They have a basic kit, a starter kit, an advanced kit, and a pro kit

We also recommend immortalizing your best makeup looks by taking photos with a good camera. No need to splurge on an SLR - we've found that you can get pretty awesome shots with the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser 5.5! You can also get Leica-powered lenses with the Huawei P9, but to improve your skills, make sure to check out our flatlay tips.

When the price is right: Here's an anti-aging duo we can get behind

Anti-aging products have a reputation for being pretty expensive. A serum can start at P3,000 upwards, while a jar of moisturizer often fetch upwards of P2,000. At the same time, there is an impression that cheap anti-aging products don't work. These ideas may keep some people from being more pro-active about keeping their skin as youthful-looking as possible.

Thankfully, Olay - a brand well-loved by our moms and titas - is here to save the day! They have a new duo that is just the right price for women our age while still promising concentrated actives.

Just as your morning skin care routine would differ from what you do at night, your anti-aging efforts also serve to address different skin issues. For daytime, you ideally need to get lightweight products with SPF to go underneath your makeup. In the evening, a rich, reparative formula is better for amping the effects of your beauty sleep. Night-time serums and moisturizers often have a reputation for being richer (and maybe greasier) to pack in moisture and reverse daily damage but the Olay Regenerist Night Ritual dares to be different in that regard.

Olay products boast of cutting-edge technology in skin lightening and anti-aging, having established itself as household name since the 50s. Even the packaging speaks of innovation: The Olay Regenerist Miracle Boost Youth Pre-Essence (P1,399) may be contained in a dropper bottle but you needn’t squeeze to get the product out. Once the cap is unscrewed, the dropper button automatically pops up and picks up the product. That means the dropper is already pre-loaded and ready to dispense. Convenient, right? One dropper-full of the Pre-Essence is exactly enough to cover the face and the neck.

The Miracle Boost Youth Pre-Essence, with Olay’s barrier-strengthening Skin Energy Complex, has a runny gel consistency that feels like water once you're massaging it on. It is absorbed by my skin instantly, and doesn't feel oily or sticky. The consistency allows for it to be layered with other products easily. It might even be tempting to apply some before makeup.

The Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream (P1,699) has a velvety feel, almost like makeup primer. It spreads with a little tug (due to a drier formula) and settles into a satin-matte finish. It contains Hydra-Firming Complex and Amino-Peptide Complex, the latter going deep into the skin to work on wrinkles. Again, it feels like something light enough that it could be applied before makeup during the day.

In the morning, I don’t see excessively shiny skin after allowing my face to soak up both products all night. The notable difference I experienced after using these for a couple of weeks was how my skin felt generally smoother. In terms of wrinkle-reduction though, I'll probably have to continue using these for a bit longer before I get visible results but adding this duo to my routine makes me feel more confident about preventing any more lines from showing up.

Both Olay skincare products are able to work well individually but I do think they make a great two-step nightly anti-aging routine. Their corresponding consistencies complement each other, and the quick absorption gives the sense of the products penetrating the skin rather than just sitting on top of it.

Have you started including anti-aging products into your bedtime routine? Do you prefer a rich, thick formula, or are you looking for a product that won’t leave you feeling greasy?

Staff Picks: Foundation for rainy days

Compiled by Diane Salazar, contributor

While summer has us playing with colors and heat-proofing our makeup, our beauty concerns also get updated with the change of season. With the dark clouds, strong winds and heavy downpours, we keep the gloomy weather from creeping onto our faces with foundations that brighten complexions and stay weatherproof. Check out our top picks for the rainy days ahead!

Liz: Cushion makeup is surprisingly damp weather-proof! They adhere so well onto the skin since their texture is so thin. My tip is, when it's rainy, avoid the heavy coverage bases since they have a high chance of caking in the wetness. Don't use too much powder; they will liquefy anyway. I love the Bobbi Brown Cushion Compact since it barely needs to be set with powder and gives my face a nice glow.

Den: I currently love the NoTS Silk Glow Foundation! The finish is dewy and makes my skin look radiant. The creamy formula also seems to hydrate my skin, which is prone to dryness in cold weather. It’s also pretty heavy duty in spite of feeling weightless, so it doesn’t come off if it gets too balmy or I get caught in a light shower.

Marielle: I haven't purchased a foundation that specifically features a long-wear formula, but I did jump into a pool a few hours after applying Etude House Precious Mineral Any Cushion. When I was done swimming, I was surprised to find that most of my makeup remained intact. I feel like its formula had a huge hand in improving the wear-time of my base!

Gett: I'm not one to put on foundation, especially during rainy season. I prefer something lightweight and easy, like the Bourjois 123 Perfect CC cream. While it does not provide any coverage, it evens out any redness or unevenness of my skin tone. It has a dewy finish which I like even if I do have oily skin because it gives a "my skin but better" look.

Charlie: Around the rainy season, I take out my Innisfree Smart Foundation | Long Lasting. It doesn’t have much coverage but I love it because it feels light on the skin and it stays on all day despite the humid weather.

VB: On rainy days, I reach for a foundation with a more luminous finish. I'm currently loving Cover Girl’s Stay Luminous Natural Glow Foundation. This is a medium to full coverage foundation that doesn’t feel cakey and almost perfectly evens out my stubborn dark spots. The finish is beautiful especially when using a flat top brush!

Crystal: Now that the weather is not crazy hot anymore, I don’t have to reach for uber long-lasting foundations. I reach for Too Faced Born This Way foundation, which gives medium coverage and looks great on my skin!

Sam: The NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint doesn't budge when wet, which is perfect for the occasional drizzle (I wouldn't place myself in a situation where the torrential downpour will hit my face, but I assume it would fare well in the event that that happens, too). It feels like nothing on the skin while doing a great job at coverage and longevity. For dry-skinned girls, a drop of beauty oil will tone down the matte-ness but keep the velvety texture.

Are your foundation faves on our list? What face bases are you reaching for this rainy season?

Five Instagram beauty hacks that are actually useful

I swear, Instagram beauty gurus are either genius or completely batshit crazy. While I love and swear by a few skincare and makeup hacks that I’ve come across on Instagram, I cringe whenever I see a popular post suggesting for me to put lemon juice or baking soda in my face. I don’t want to disrupt my acid mantle and suffer a breakout, thank you.

There are millions of beauty hacks to be found online but not all of them are safe and effective. We’ve tried Japanese beauty hacks, and we tested out some nail polish hacks from Pinterest as well. Here’s the Instagram version, and these five simple tricks that are PV-approved. ;)

Store your egg sponges in Easter eggs

Liz gave me the other sponge from the Nippon Pro Blend Sponge kit and I’ve been storing it in a coffee mug like I do all of my other makeup tools. Plastic Easter eggs are a much better idea, however. It’s more travel-friendly this way, too, so your precious (dry) sponge won't get squished in transit.

static1.squarespace-2.jpg
static1.squarespace-3.jpg

Maximize your mask with cotton pads

I’m all about that sheet mask life but my wallet would cry if I were to use one every single day. I would if I could though, TBH, so thanks to this hack, I just might! Somebody thought to combine Liz’s neat trick of saving  the leftover mask essence and the Korean cotton pad masking practice. Now I can extend the life of my favorite mask for two to three more uses!

Roots_(2).JPG
Roots_(1).JPG

Hide your roots with contour powder or brow mascara

If you’re out of tinted dry shampoo or too lazy to DIY, a quick fix to hide your roots would be to use a contour powder or a brow mascara. Just remember to wash it off at night or the very next day if you don’t want to deal with the horrors of product build up. I don’t mind when my roots are showing, but this is a pretty handy hack for special, heavily photographed moments.

(Editor's Note: You can also use a combination of brown and black eyeshadow to match your hair color!)

Increase the color vibrancy of any pencil through heating

If you have any pencil product that takes several swipes to show up, don’t throw it out just yet! Hold it near an open flame for about three to five seconds, and allow to cool before applying. The heat makes the pencil creamier and the color more vibrant.

Blend your foundation with a sock

It sounds weird and maybe even a little gross but it works surprisingly well! I saw this on Instagram but found that this video explained how to ball up the heel or toe area properly, depending on which part you want to use. Use the balled-up sock to lightly bounce and blend foundation all over your face.

It wasn’t streaky like I imagined and I did get a nice, even sheered out finish. It’s not Beauty Blender airbrush levels but it blended out the same way as if I had used a kabuki brush. The only downside is that it does absorb more product than usual. You also have to make sure to wash the sock after each use but it dries faster than brushes or sponges so I don't feel like it's a hassle at all.

Let me know which among these you wind up trying out! And if you've tried any other Instahacks that worked for you, we'd love to hear about it in the comments.

End the search: 12 pink lipsticks for every skin tone and occasion

Do you remember your first ever lipstick? Chances are, it's pink! It's the easiest and most fun to wear as it brightens our complexion in an instant. Subtle and sweet or neon hot, everybody loves a good pink. There isn't really a wrong shade of pink unless it's too pale for your skin, so think of this more as a guide on how to choose the best shade for your coloring. Enjoy!

SKIN TONE

As with any lip color, your skin tone and skin undertone is always a good place to start. As mentioned in our red lippie guide, my personal preference is basing on the undertone (warm, cool or neutral) because skin tone can vary depending on your exposure to the sun or use of skin whitening or lightening products.

Cool undertones are perfect with blue/purple-based pinks. The Pink Sugar Creamy Matte Lipstick (P349) in Catfight and Selfie are perfect examples of these. MAC Pink Pigeon (P1,100) and OFRA Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Hollywood (P850) are great picks as well.

Blue-based pinks have a quick whitening effect on the teeth; just don't go too pale. Purple-based ones always look amazing on deeper skin.

Warm undertones need orange/brown-based pinks (which you can totally rock if you don't want the straight-up brown lippie trend). Try the AVON Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Pure Pink (P399) and L'OREAL Color Riche L'Extraordinaire Matte in Jardin Pamplemousse (P400).

The lucky neutral undertones can go either way, so you can narrow your choices based on your skin tone. The OFRA Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Laguna Beach (P850), Giorgio Armani Rouge d'Armani 512 (~P1,700),and NYX Round Lipstick in Tea Rose (P260) are great pinks to go with.

Get comfortable with these lipsticks so you can wear them everywhere. From working hard to playing harder, pink is a good lipstick option.

MOOD

The different shades of pink give off different impressions, and of course we want to put our best face forward! The first one that comes to mind is the polished pink. These my-lips-but-better shades of pink can be your go-tos for work or school. You need to look professional while being stylish after all. Some of Liz's favorite ones are MAC Lipstick in See Sheer (~P1,000) and CLINIQUE Chubby Stick Intense in Curviest Caramel (P920). For pinkish nudes, you can check out the HAPPY SKIN Shut Up& Kiss Me Moisturizing Lippie in Hold My Hand (P599) and PINK SUGAR Creamy Matte Lipstick in Hot Mess (P349).

The flirty sweet pinks like those in the L'OREAL Velvet Pinks La Vie En Rose Lipstick (P400) collection are perfect for daily wear, or wherever casual is the name of the game. Liz featured lip swatches of the collection so you can see how they can flatter your everyday makeup look. Also check out INGLOT HD Lip Tint Matte in #16 (P1,150) and BOBBI BROWN Nourishing Lip Color in Island Pink (P1,400) for more options.

Special occasions call for special shades of pink, aka the party pink! The MAYBELLINE Color Sensational Rebel Bouquet Lipstick (P299) collection has several standout pinks included. Go for bright shades like REB02 at the more serious events and go bold with loud shades like REB10 when you let loose. Other pop-out pinks include the cult fave MAC Candy Yum Yum (P1,100) as well as the GIVENCHY Le Rouge in Hibiscus Exclusif (~P1,700) for a slightly more subdued option.

As always, don't feel constrained by these guidelines. If you find a pink you love and it looks good on you, then you should definitely go for it. It's also more fun to have a pink lipstick that matches your every mood, so you can instantly turn your working girl makeup look to one that looks more ready to have fun!

Do you have a favorite pink lipstick? Tell us about the ones you love, and would love to have!

FYI: Rape happens because of rapists, not what you wore or drank

$

This was a real conversation with a friend. "I don't want to sound like I'm blaming the victim," he opened while I cringed, already knowing what he'd say next. People who say they don't want to blame the victim have a tendency to end up blaming the victim anyway. "But she shouldn't have gotten drunk enough to pass out if she didn't want anything to happen to her," he said, speaking of the woman who was raped behind a dumpster by a Stanford athlete.

"We shouldn't be telling women to avoid wearing revealing clothes or avoid getting drunk, we should be telling men not to rape women," I shot back. The problem is men believing they have a right to a woman's body if she dresses or acts a certain way; shows, books, music, and seeing other people's (men and women alike) cues reinforces this belief. Rape culture is pervasive but not always overt.

For example, the other day, I was walking down the street when a man in a motorcycle shouted "Ganda mo naman!" to me as he whizzed by. This sounds harmless and other people may *think* it's a compliment, but that didn't make me feel good at all. If he thinks he has the right to say that to a total stranger, I wonder how he acts towards women whom he actually comes in contact with. Does he stop with just an unsolicited "compliment"? I don't want to find out.

Just don't look, Liz. Pretend you didn't hear it. He might get ideas and come back, I said to myself. Without thinking I crossed and instead of walking in the outer street where cars pass by (as I normally do), I slipped into a private street where there's a security guard.

Is this an overreaction? I don't think so. This has happened so many times, my reaction (such as it were) was already automatic. Women know this feeling of being on the defensive at all times.

"We live in the world that is, not as it should be," he argued back. Some men are evil - I would say pigs, but that's unfair to the pigs - who want to dominate and own. Why provoke them, why give them a reason to be their next target? It won't kill you to dress modestly, they say. It won't kill you to simply avoid drinking with them or being alone with them. Rapists deserve the full force of the law - but please, don't cause them to want to control you and give in to their base urges.

"Do you think I don't know this?" I told him, bitterly. I only ride Ubers or private cars. I absolutely avoid walking in streets unless it's only a short distance, and when that happens I am always on high alert. I look for other males in the area - are they in a group, or are they alone? How far are they from me, how fast can I run? If I absolutely must be in an unsafe place, I dress as conservatively as possible. Pants, a loose shirt, sneakers.

The main reason I haven't moved out of my current neighborhood even though it's not convenient for me to live here anymore is because it's heavily guarded. There are guards at the gate, guards at the clubhouse, roving guards, and a doorman in my building. I pay a lot of money so I can feel this safe, but at the back of my mind - always - is the question: are there any threatening males in the area? I am always watching out.

Some might argue that I'm paranoid, but if you're a woman I think you understand what I mean. This dull fear, this constant quiet surveillance of the environment, is the cost of being able to wear or do what we like. Still my world is smaller because of this fear. My range of actions are limited compared to a male's.

"Do you think I don't know this?" I asked him again. "Women have been told bluntly since we can understand what sex is that we should not wear this or that, or drink, or be alone with a man. We've been told our self-worth is tied to our virginity so men would value it too; once we are no longer virgins, well, whoopteedoo, it's a free country down there! Men can't be blamed for abusing us (economically, physically, emotionally, or verbally), we deserve it for losing our virginity before marriage and not respecting ourselves. Here's a manual on not to get raped. Read up. Don't make a mistake, or else." I've heard this exact same words from people who love me, people I respect.

Are they right?

We live in the world that is, not in the world that should be.

Instead of telling girls how to avoid getting raped, we should tell boys not to be rapists. We already know. We've heard it hundreds of times growing up. We'll probably not stop hearing it any time soon. We still get raped. So tell your little boys (or girls, or any gender) not to rape. Call out your misogynistic colleague who thinks he's witty for making inappropriate jokes. Call out Senator Sotto. Call out the catcallers. End rape culture and reshape the world we move in.

In the meantime, don't forget the pepper spray.

PS These articles say it much more eloquently than I can: I was never raped | Not a crime

Here's a good read on myths and facts about rape.

How to smell fresh even when you've just been rained on

$

by Karla Aguas, contributor

There’s no denying that summer is officially over and the rainy season has taken its place. We aren't quite in mourning, however, for who doesn’t love the cooler breeze, the relaxing sound of rain drops tapping against the window, and the opportunity to finally don that jacket that’s been mouldering in your closet? “Cuddle weather” sounds really cute, but when you get caught in a sudden downpour or your umbrella breaks while you're out, the sight (and smell) of you and your drenched clothes is pretty much the opposite of cute and cuddle-worthy.

Don’t fret - we’ve got you covered! Assuming you've weather-proofed your makeup, you can rock that wet hair look and smell like you just came out of the shower.

Tip #1: Get dry immediately and don't let the damp seep into your clothes and hair further

To be clear, you won't catch a cold or get a fever from being wet (that's only communicable by germs) but it can chill you and add to your misery. More importantly, the smell of damp clothes can be very off-putting! Pack a small towel or tissues in your purse so you can pat your clothes dry. Check nearby rest rooms for a hand dryer and use that to quickly blast your clothes, assuming you're able to do so in private of course!

Keeping a hair dryer in your office drawer is always a good idea if you have a spot where you can use it.

Tip #2: There’s nothing “baby” about baby colognes

If there’s one thing I learned in my four years at college, a light scent is often more useful than a bottle of perfume. Aside from being packed in more durable plastic containers, colognes have a gentler scent that allow you to spray liberally on damp items that you can't dry completely. Perfumes have heavy scents that usually don't mix well with existing bad odors, so that may actually worsen your Eau De Basang Sisiw. I also find colognes more refreshing because they remind me of that clean, after-shower aroma!

Tip #3: Wet wipes and spray-on alcohol are your BFFs

Where there’s rain, there’s mud. And where there’s mud, there’s a muddy mess. Were you really wearing brown flats earlier? Just because your shoes are closest to the ground doesn’t mean you should leave them to the elements, or the remains of a rainy run.  Having a pack of wet wipes on hand ensures that when you’ve finally found shelter from the storm, you can quickly sanitize both your feet and your muddy shoes. Spray them with alcohol, too, to further keep bacteria from growing in your footwear.

Tip #4: Choose scented hair products that won't easily wash out

Find hair cleansers with a scent that lasts all day long to help make you smell less like a rained-on victim and more like a fresh-from-the-shower goddess. Thankfully it's easy to find them in drugstores. We adore the Pantene 3-Minute Conditioner in particular as its lovely scent really latches onto our hair.

You can also lightly scent your hair with cologne or any of your favorite perfumes. Just spritz overhead then walk under to get a light mist.

Tip #5: Bring extra clothes

It may seem like an inconvenience, but keeping an extra top or sweater on hand may just save you 15-20 minutes drying yourself off in the bathroom. Raid your closet for a lightweight, wrinkle-free top that you can pack into your bag or stash at your desk. And make sure to have a plastic bag as well, so you can store wet clothing without fear of getting moisture on your other belongings.

Do you hate the smell of damp things, too? What are your rainy day tips for staying and smelling fresh in spite of getting rained on?

Budget Beauty: 10 under P500 minty finds for your skin and hair

by Charlie Esmerna, contributor

Aside from being widely used in the kitchen, mint has many beauty uses and benefits as well. It is considered as a natural skin cleanser that soothes the skin with the cooling sensation it leaves. And like strawberries, it contains naturally-occurring salicylic acid that allows it to aid against skin inflammation and acne. It also helps brighten up skin and make hair shiny! While it's no surprise that mint is a popular addition to many bath items, it's great to know that there many other minty beauty picks for less than P500!

UK brand Tesco has a good line of bath items at affordable price points so if you’re looking for something a little minty and herbal in scent, the Tesco Tea Tree and Mint Revitalising Shampoo (P99.75, SM Supermarkets) would be your best bet. This huge bottle contains 500 mL of mint green goodness that does more than just make your hair feel clean. It’s also infused with vitamins to keep your hair soft and healthy. You can also grab its partner conditioner for P109.75!

If you love cute and creatively-packaged cosmetics, this Icy Pop in Kiwi Lime Mint from Essensu (P95, Essensu kiosks) will be a great addition to your collection. This hand-made soap looks, smells and feels good on my skin!

A failure to properly read the label is actually what got me to try Rucy’s Vanity Women Cleansing Gel in Mint (P110, rucysvanityph.com). I was in search of a good cleansing gel when I picked up this prettily-designed tube, only to realize when I got home that it wasn’t meant to be used on my face. It proved to be a good discovery because it isn't as harsh on the skin as drugstore feminine washes. The scent is subtle and the cleansing power is gentle but effective.

For something that blatantly calls itself “dirty,” Lush’s Dirty Spring Wash Shower Gel (P495, Lush stores) saves you from feeling icky and unclean. This shower gel is a must-have for any mint-scent lover, as it contains spearmint and menthol crystals that gently exfoliate the skin. It leaves a tingly, refreshing sensation that makes showering post-workout feel like a real treat!

If your heels are cracked and dry, foot scrubs help you slough off the dead skin after a good soak. Tupperware does not only house affordable yet kit-worthy cosmetics, they have good skincare products under their radar, too. The Profeet Footscrub in Peppermint (P139, Tupperware dealers) is god-send for the heels that need exfoliation. Although it smells a lot like toothpaste, it’s actually quite cooling and relaxing to the feet. Apply it all the way up to your knees after a long day to help you unwind!

Don't let the name keep you from trying this one out. The Herb Day 365 Cleansing Foam in Spearmint for Men (P265, The Face Shop) is a minty facial wash that works best for those who have oily skin. It has a faint herb scent that makes it unisex-friendly, and leaves a cooling and soothing sensation on the skin that I find addicting. Plus, it doesn’t leave the face dry even if it offers a deep cleanse.

Before sheet masks dominated the scene, the Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque (P395, Healthy Options) was one of the most popular picks for home masking because it smells minty-awesome and just works so well! If you find your skin feeling dull and on the verge of another big breakout, slather this on your face for a good few minutes and wash it off. Because it’s mint-powered, it not only brightens the face but also helps stop those nasty pimples in their tracks.

Whether you had to pull an all-nighter or you just cried over a new heart-wrenching film, chances are you’ve found yourself waking up with puffy and/or swollen eyes at least once. While aegyo-sal is a running Korean trend, sporting big eye bags isn’t something everyone can pull off. Etude House’s Eye’s Cream Mint Cooling Stick (P428) helps soothe your puffy and dark eye area with a cooling sensation that instantly perks you and your face up. You don't even have to wait for eyebags to use this; just swipe it on whenever you need to look and feel wide-awake and refreshed!

The Bench fashion empire may not be an obvious choice for beauty shopping but it has long been one of those unlikely places to check for beauty finds. One such find is their Alcogel Love Yourself Mint Liquid Hand Soap (P129, Bench). You don't want to be touching your face with dirty hands so grab this huge bottle to keep your paws smelling minty and feeling squeaky clean.

Here's another addition to our SPF-powered lip balms list! Supergoop’s Mint Fusion Lip Balm SPF30 (P436, Sephora.ph) protects your lips from the sun's damaging UV rays and moisturizes them with a generous dose of shea butter as well. The mint infusion is a nice addition for when your lips feel particularly chapped.

Do you love the refreshing smell and tingly-clean sensation of mint? What are your favorite minty picks?

Splurge vs Save: Four rose blushes for that blooming glow

It is a fact universally acknowledged that you can't go wrong with rose blush. It's universally flattering when sheered out into a tender pink, and the color itself is so versatile that you can use it for all FOTDS and occasions. I have a few in my kit that I LOVE blushing with, so I thought of making a quick list of both expensive and more affordable options for you guys! They're pretty close dupes of each other with minor differences.

I personally prefer cream blushes for everyday wear since they just look more natural and skin-like compared to powder. They might not last as long but they are easy to retouch especially when they come in stick form - I literally just stamp a couple of big dots on my cheeks then pat it with a clean finger! They're my best bet when I travel.

I love the Estee Lauder Pure Color Lip & Cheek stick in Rose Exposed (~P1,600) because it's a beautiful earthy rose shade that makes my skin look so healthy and glowy. It melts onto my skin and is ridiculously easy to blend! It's also a flattering lipstick color. It adheres nicely and is pretty much opaque in one layer.

A great substitute for it is the Happy Skin Glisten Up Blush (P799), a slightly pinker version that's as lovely and easy to blend as Rose Exposed. It's not as wearable on the lips - it's really meant to be a blush, not dual purpose like Estee's - but I think you'll find it excels in its one job.

If you have oily skin and prefer powder formulas, here are two fail-proof options: the Lancome Blush Subtil in Very Rose (~P2,000) and TheBalm Instain Blush in Lace (P895 in Beauty Bar). They look almost alike and I swear, they last just as long! They're tattooed onto my oily-combination cheeks once I blend them with a fluffy brush. They have a staying power of up to 7 hours on me which is pretty impressive!

The Lancome in Very Rose has a slight mauve tint to it whereas the Instain in Lace is a brighter pink. The difference is almost undetectable though, even the matte finish. They look quite bright in the pan but they diffuse into a pretty sheer pink that works with whatever skin tone you might have. The formula are both topnotch - except Lancome comes in a luxurious compact with a brush compared to TheBalm's cardboard box.

Five makeup finds that we'd actually be willing to pay more for

by Gett Baladad, contributor

My personal thrill in life is finding quality makeup without the hefty price tag. Admittedly, you don't usually expect a lot from something you picked up from the drugstore but then some products perform way better than splurge options. Here are some discoveries that prove top-notch quality can be well within budget!

Pinkies Collections Smooth Silky Long Liner Pencil, P89 at department stores

I probably wouldn't have noticed this unassuming pink pencil had I not been on the hunt for a cheap lip liner. I got the shade Bubblegum, a rosy-brown color reminiscent of those on-trend 90s lip colors. The formula is surprisingly opaque and so creamy that it glides on the lips easily. It dries down comfortably and has a satin finish. You'll need a makeup sharpener to maintain the fine point but it's longer than the standard lip pencil and contains 2.2g of product.

If you want to use this on its own (like I usually do), lasting power is about four to five hours or until you eat something greasy. These come in 19 different shades, ranging from the tame (your usual reds and pinks) to the outrageous (blue, black, white)!

San San Cosmetics Lip Crayon, P165 at HBC

They look like jumbo lip liners but these are actually richly pigmented and creamy lip crayons! I got curious about these when I saw them at the store because I wanted to try some matte lippies, and these were available in a variety of shades. Rich Mocha seemed like browny-pink nude shade but it turned out more peachy-brown on when applied to the lips. Power Plum is a beautiful deep wine color that looks even more sophisticated because of the matte finish.

Upon application, they have a slight minty tingle to them. It doesn't bother me it but it’s something to keep in mind, particularly for those with sensitive lips. Staying power is four to five hours, which is pretty decent considering the pocket-friendly price tag. Just make sure to blot off the excess to prevent this from moving around!

Nature Republic Botanical Cake Eyebrow Powder, P385 at Nature Republic stores

This set is super sulit given what you’re getting: two eyebrow powders, a little spoolie and brush, and a good-sized mirror. The pigmentation of the powders is just enough that it’s foolproof, and the tools can get the job done if you don't have a separate brush. Best of all, the powder stays put all day, especially when set with a brow mascara! I’ve had my set for a solid two years, and only hit pan recently even with daily use.

You can choose from two shades: No. 1 is good for those with black to dark brown hair, while No. 2 can be used to match lighter hair. The powder shades are also neutral, not too reddish or orangey, so it suits both natural and colored hair.

Flormar Perfect Coverage Liquid Concealer, P399 at department stores

The Perfect Coverage Liquid Concealer has a consistency that’s between creamy and watery. It has enough slip that it blends easily but it’s thick enough that you only need to use a little. The shade that I have, Light Beige, was the darkest available shade when I bought it, and I find that this totally erased the darkness on my under eye area because of its peachy tone!

Something to also note: this has a strong powdery scent. It goes away within seconds after application but it may be a deal-breaker for those with sensitive noses. I personally dislike the scent myself but given how well this covers my dark circles, I'm only too willing to keep repurchasing!

Pink Sugar Our Lil’ Secret Concealer, P299 at department stores

This ain’t a PV favorite for nothing! A little goes a long way for this concealer. Make sure to work fast because it sets fast! And once it sets, you’re good for the day. This has lasted me through MRT commutes, and we know how hot it gets especially during rush hour.

I currently have two colors: I use Light-Medium as an eyelid primer for my oily lids and I find that this helps in prolonging my eye makeup! Just remember to use sparingly or risk having cakey eyelids! For blemishes and pimples, the Medium shade matches my skin tone perfectly.

Seven common questions about Micellar Water, answered

$
0
0

Kids, there was a time when micellar water was not something you can buy at your nearest Watsons. You had to go to a French pharmacy to get a bottle, and years later you could grab it in Hong Kong if you knew where to look. Now you can't go outside and throw a pebble without hitting a micellar (or cleansing) water bottle in Manila. Just joking. My point is, this phenomenal, game-changing cleanser is so accessible now that even FMCG brands like Nivea, Maybelline, and Garnier have their own.

Micellar cleansers are, for me, the best way to remove makeup quickly and with the least amount of discomfort. I never looked back once I finally got my hands on the Bioderma Crealine three years ago! It removes makeup so effectively without being harsh; I try other makeup remover formulas, but I always go back to micellar water. Bifesta still remains as my favorite brand. It's consistently good and fairly affordable at P420.

#1: So what is micellar water, exactly?

Micelles, or tiny oil molecules, are suspended in a liquid solution. These molecules pick up dirt, oil, and makeup without leaving an oily feel due to the water-like (but not quite water) base. They don't sting the eyes and are *usually* tasteless which makes them pleasant to use. Makeup artists love this stuff because they can correct or remove makeup entirely without requiring the model to wash her face.

Makeup wipes are basically towelettes soaked with micellar water. Same banana, just a different method of delivery.

#2: What can micellar water do for my skin?

Aside from makeup, micellar water is good for toning and moisturizing the face. It depends per brand, but the only one I've tried that I felt had actual skincare benefits was the Bioderma Sebium/Sensibio for sensitive skin. Nuxe's Cleansing Water With Rose Petals, I found, was hydrating but not enough to replace a real moisturizer. Other brands are just really cleansers but don't do anything else other than prepping the skin for the products that follow.

In my experience, you can remove makeup with MW, rinse your face with water, then go straight to sleep. They're that effective in cleansing without drying the skin! I would still recommend a full skincare regimen, of course, but it's nice to have options when you're too tired to bother.

#3: Does it matter whether I choose a specific micellar water for my skin type?

I was at Bangkok recently and was greeted by a whole shelf of different MWs when I visited Boot's. They promise anti-aging, moisture for dry skin, oil prevention for oily skin, and so on. I haven't tried all, but the different variants I've come across in the past aren't really so different from each other.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter what your skin type is. You're going to have to wash it off anyway. If you don't intend to, maybe it'd make a difference, but that'd be ill-advised especially here in the PH. Our climate and brewing vat of city pollution requires more than washing your face exclusively with MW. You'd still need soap.

#4: Can micellar water remove waterproof makeup?

Sorry, guys - it can't. It can remove water-resistant, long-wearing, thick makeup formulations given enough time and cotton, but since it's still mostly water it can't break down hardened products. If you're wearing light makeup, one pass is enough. The thicker your makeup is, the more times you'll have to go back to remove everything. You need something oily or greasy to take off waterproof stuff.

#5: Should I use a cotton ball or pad with micellar water?

Cotton pad, please. You need a big surface area to be able to pick up the makeup off your face cleanly. What I do is kinda put two pads together with just one side touching, "glue" them together with MW, then sweep that contraption all over my face. I also often squirt MW on makeup wipes if I want to hurry up the process - try this whenever you have A LOT of makeup on.

#6: Why is there still left-over makeup on my face even after I've thoroughly wiped it with cotton-soaked micellar water?

The secret is applying pressure on the whole area BEFORE wiping or rubbing off the makeup. Put your whole palm over the skin and wipe upwards to unseat all that product! This is important especially in the sensitive eye area.

#3: Which micellar water brands should I try?

Honestly, they really aren't that much different from each other. I love Bioderma (available in Watsons and SM Beauty), but it's so pricey at like P1,300 for 100ml! Bifesta (Watsons) is the best for me so far at P420. Nivea's Cleansing Water is still not available here currently, but their wipes at P140 a pack ain't too bad at all. Maybelline's Micellar Water is pretty good (will review soon) and is only P199. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to go for Cetaphil's Cleansing Cloths at P239. I find them thicker and more luxurious compared to Nivea's wipes.

Hope  you found this quick 101 useful! I'd like to know if you have any information or tips to share about micellar water too. ^_^

Fix It Fast: Five ways to quickly correct makeupocalypse

In the golden age of social media, almost every aspect of our lives is documented on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. It's no surprise that the pressure is on to constantly look sleek AF! But when you combine that desire to channel your inner Sasha Fierce while rushing out the door for your daily commute, accidents like applying too much makeup are bound to happen every now and then. So for *oh, crap* moments when you can’t afford to start over, we have a few quick ways to remedy that heavy-handed makeup look!

My right brow looks lighter and not as severe as the one on the left

My right brow looks lighter and not as severe as the one on the left

Tone down too-dark brows

Problem: Eyebrows that are too dark and too harsh.

Solution: Erase some of the product with a clean spoolie and/or a cotton bud. Then use a light-colored brow mascara to lightly and evenly coat your brow hairs, applying first in a direction against the hair growth before slicking it back to place.

Create a more natural contour

Problem: Snickers bar contouring; it's like having brown mud lines where they shouldn't exist.

Solution: For powder contour, use clean fingers to dab away the excess with soft pats. Follow this up by using a clean fluffy brush to lightly blend out the edges, or pat on a bit of powder foundation to even it out. If you prefer using a cream or stick contour, make sure to add a makeup sponge in your beauty arsenal. You can use it dry to pat away excess product and tone down any overzealous contouring.

Diffuse a streaky blush

Problem: Your blush made you look like you either have a bad rash or got slapped really hard.

Solution: Remove excess by dabbing (not wiping!) the angry color away with some cotton or clean tissue. Use a clean brush to diffuse it further, then dust a layer of soft-focus highlighter on top. The light-reflecting particles will draw attention away from the tomato situation underneath, and make your skin look bright and dewy.

Erase panda-worthy eye makeup

Problem: Waaaay too much eyeshadow, mascara, and eyeliner that ended up looking like a black eye.

Solution: If it's still salvageable, wipe away the eyeshadow gently with tissue then use a blending brush (say a MAC 217 or equivalent) to reshape the eyeshadow. Just be patient in blending, and don't go beyond the crease when applying dark colors. If all hope it lost, saturate a cotton pad with some micellar water, place it on top of your eyes, then wipe quickly without disturbing the surrounding areas. Apply the foundation you used on your face again, prime (as needed), and repeat the look if you still have time.

Lighten up dark lipstick

Problem: A bold, dark lip that ended up not working out with your FOTD or the rest of your outfit.

Solution: Blot the color away with some tissue then top your lips with a lighter lip shade, such as a nude. Gently press your lips together to allow the colors to mix.

Sandara Park's top skin and hair care advice, plus her newest beauty secret

"Pwede ba Taglish?" was all Korean pop superstar Sandara Park had to say to charm the Philippine press in Bangkok during our interview. She was just introduced as the latest Head & Shoulders brand ambassador, and she looked delighted to see her kababayans even as she clinched one of her biggest endorsements to date.

The actress and singer was in a gorgeous blue outfit and hair that is as stunning in person as in the pictures. In fact, she looks exactly like how she registers on screen, and we couldn't help but envy well - everything about her.  What hair advice would you give to your best friend, we fire away. "Wash your hair properly and regularly. Important to use good haircare products para maganda yung hair mo. And you should let your hair breathe!" Dara says.

She is equally chill when it comes to maintaining her skin. "I just cleanse it well and put a mask every night as much as possible. I drink plenty of water…and think positive! Yan palaging important," she shares.

The secret to her youthful, dewy skin? "Naglalagay ako ng mask every night para next day glowing yung skin. Actually I can use any brand, kasi lahat naman pare-pareho yung result. Ngayon meron mga mask pack na animal print so I like those," Dara gushes. As for makeup, she can't currently live without three things. "Since summer na rin sa Korea, important yung sunblock. Ngayon there’s sunblock na colored, parang foundation! And blush, para laging fresh and kunwari cute haha. And then lipstick…gusto ko yung mga bright colors like orange and pink para I look alive." She has an endearing sense of humor.

Sandara (2).JPG
Sandara (1).JPG

Famous for her adventurous and colorful hairstyles, Dara knows how to take care of her hair. She confesses to using weaves to lessen the damage and going to salons for regular treatments and scalp massages. For everyday care though, she loves Head & Shoulders' new Tri-Action Formula. "It helps because I change my hairstyle a lot so parang laging damaged. I massage my scalp with the shampoo, and it helps me protect, moisturize, and cleanse everyday," says Dara of her new beauty secret.

But what is it, really? The Tri-Action Formula is Head & Shoulders' biggest innovation in the last decade. According to Saint Anthony Tiu, Senior Scientific Communications Manager for Hair Care, P&G Asia Pacific, years of research led to a breakthrough that allowed them to micronize their active ingredient for fighting dandruff. Eight times tinier, their patented pyrithione zinc or ZPT is now able to penetrate the scalp much more thoroughly to combat the cause and symptoms of dandruff.

They have also improved the formula of Head & Shoulders shampoos to act more like skincare instead of just fighting dandruff. Now, it promises to cleanse better with richer suds, protect the scalp from bacterial infection and damage, and moisturize our hair at the same time.

I am personally excited by this news. I LOVE Head & Shoulders shampoo because it's one of the very, very few shampoos that doesn't break me out (I'm super sensitive to hair products). It's the only one that can keep away my dandruff too! I suffered from so many breakouts and a horrible wounded scalp in my early 20s (I shiver to remember) until I "discovered" Head & Shoulders for myself. I like to tell people that while it's not glamorous, Head & Shoulders is a staple in my bath shelf. It just works so well for me, especially since it gives my fine hair volume too.

“I love the fact that my work allows me to change my hairstyle almost by the hour! But that also means that my hair needs to be in tip top condition at all times. I’m super excited to be joining the Head & Shoulders family! It’s my complete hair and scalp care solution, allowing me to rock the stage with confidence,” says Sandara Park. She adds, "See you in Manila soon!"

We can't wait to see what she's working on as she gave us a hint during the interview. ;) It was lovely meeting her, and it's all thanks to the P&G team! If you're curious, I also posted personal stuff about my Bangkok trip here.

Tell me, what would you like to ask or say to Sandara if you ever see her in person? What's your favorite Head & Shoulders variant?

Miniso is your new bargain beauty paradise! Here's what to buy & how much

Are you familiar with the brand Miniso? If you’ve ever visited Hong Kong or China, then there’s a high chance that you’ve seen a store before as they are literally all over the place (1000 stores and counting). Liz blogged about her Miniso haul back in November when she went to HK, and lucky for us, we can just as easily raid their shelves now that they’ve opened their first branch in Manila!

This Japanese brand is what you get when you combine Uniqlo’s store aesthetic, MUJI’s product catalog, and Daiso’s price point – sounds awesome, right? So I made sure to schedule a trip to their store on the second level of Robinsons Manila. Even from afar, the store's clean and bright interiors quickly caught my eye, and by the time I got through the door, I knew I wasn't leaving any time soon.

The beauty products are front and center upon entering. There are face bases, lip products, blushes, eyeshadows, mascaras, different brow formulas, and nail polish – pretty much everything, really! Prices range from P99 to P199, so you can go on a makeup haul without breaking the bank. Click the images to see them up close!

Spotted some brushes that looked familiar! They have look alikes for Ecotools and Real Techniques for P99 per piece to P349 for sets.

Most of the staple beauty tools like eyelash curlers, puffs and nail care tools were priced at P99 each. They even have lid stickers (third row, on the right) for monolids who want to create the appearance of double folds.

These pastel-colored makeup bags made me swoon! They're quite roomy, too, so you can have some place to store all your new cosmetic goodies.

Next to the makeup area is another dedicated to skincare. My attention immediately went to these toners that contain floating petals - they reminded me of Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Toner, except these are much cheaper at only P99. These are available in daisy, sunflower, and lavender variants.

They also have a variety of sheet masks for us addicts, yay! Regular sheet masks are priced at P199 for a pack of five, while the black sheet masks are a bit more expensive at P299. Hydrogel masks are also available at P199 for three pieces.

These rose-scented soaps are just the cutest, and they only cost P150 per box! They also come in shades of blue and violet, and I’m honestly considering getting all four to use as photo props.

One of the more expensive items available in Miniso are these sonic brush cleansers at P750. The tag is still more affordable than most, and I’m curious how they’d perform. Planning to get these next time!

These products made my DIY-loving heart so happy! I like the idea of being able to play kitchen scientist with utensils just for mixing up homemade cosmetics. I also found the compressed sheet mask towels that I'd been looking for, at just P199/100 pieces! They're  perfect for using up the leftover essence from my favorite masks!

If you don't like traveling with full-sized bottles, transferring them into smaller containers is a must. These travel kits are much cheaper than what I usually buy! They come in a variety of container combinations, and are only P149 for each reusable ziplock kit containing seven pieces.

Miniso also carries a variety of body and home fragrances. I’ve tried their Green Tea fragrance (P199) before, and it’s one of my cheaper alternatives to my HG Elizabeth Arden Green Tea. These cute things are tiny ceramic aroma diffusers and are priced at only P99 each.

I was overwhelmed by the wide variety of bags! And their totes, purses, clutches, shoulder bags, bucket bags, doctor bags, and backpacks are super impressive. The designs and colors are in that perfect sweet little spot between classic and trendy, and the stitching and hardware are also surprisingly of high quality. You get a lot more than what you’d normally expect from a P299 to P550 price point. I want almost everything, TBH.

They also have a ton of accessories to choose from but what really caught my eye was the nice display of hats and sunnies (P99 to P350). No need to wait for summer to use these babies; I'm all about keeping my skin protected from the sun, and these stylish options perfectly fit the bill.

They have tons of other stuff in the gadgets, home, school, and fashion categories but that will need another post or two. There are so many interesting finds in Miniso and stocks run out fast  - by the time I got there, all of their acrylic makeup organizers were already sold out! Will definitely have to come back again and hopefully catch the new stocks.

In case you were wondering, the brand IS Japanese - items are said to be designed in their Japan HQ - but the products are sourced and manufactured in China, South Korea and Malaysia. If you’re particularly conscious of avoiding cosmetics that are produced in China, just check the individual packaging of each item when you visit.

Have you ever been in a Miniso before? Which of their products have you tried and recommend?

It's not wine, it's lip tint - and it's pretty good

Koreans really know how to make us go "ooh". Their latest successful attempt is the Chateau Labiotte Wine Lip Tint (P500 at Mei Satsuki) which is packaged in a cute mini wine bottle that immediately stands out to the eye. It smells like sweet grape juice and tastes a bit bitter, but the wine connection stops there. It's a lip tint that delivers solid pigmentation with a smooth, brilliant finish.

This watery "tint" is a breeze to apply even though it's so opaque. I'm impressed that it sticks even to my upper lips which normally seems to repel these kinds of formulas! If I want a light, ombre tint, one layer will do. If I want full coverage, it only takes two layers. I don't find it drying at all (also impressive for a tint) so I don't need to apply lip balm beforehand. If you have patchy lips though, I recommend letting a balm dry on your lips first before application.

Staying power is pretty good at 3-4 hours if you don't eat. Drinking's fine as the Labiotte tint doesn't transfer at all once it sets. However, it will fade around the lip corners once you eat oily food. There will be a stain but the top opaque layer will kind of dissolve.

lip tint 3.jpg
tint swatch.jpg

On the left photo I am wearing RD01, a deep red, while on the right I have on OR01, a red orange. See how solid the tint goes on - in fact, I hesitate to call it a tint haha. I love how the formula seems to smooth out my lip lines and how brilliant the colors are.

Mei Satsuki also sells a mini version of this, as seen in the header photo above. Love the travel-friendly size and how I can try other shades without comitting to a full tube.

Overall, I find the Chateau Labiotte Wine Lip Tint to be more than the buzz and the cute packaging. It's a great lip product to have in my kit as it's super pigmented, stays a decent amount of time, and is comfortable on the lips. ^_^ I think it may have just sent me on a lip tint craze! It's just so refreshing to not have to worry about my lips moving around or coming off whenever I drink.

Thoughts?

Five pageant makeup tips from a pro makeup artist

$

BDJ has always thrown great beauty events, so we were pretty excited to be invited to their BDJ Glam Indulgence Beauty Boot Camp at the Rockwell Club last month! Upon arrival, I was given a sweet welcome gift containing the Olay Regenerist Miracle Duo and a checklist for the Beauty Fair featuring the well-loved beauty brands and activities that awaited at every booth. The numerous brand partners included Canon, Skechers, Wacoal, and GlamGlow to name a few.

Aside from all the fabulous makeovers, awesome freebies, and shopping perks, the Beauty Boot Camp featured makeup workshops for the BDJ Bellas. The room was filling up quick but I managed to pop into one of the three certificate workshops offered at the event, the Beauty Queen Glamour Achieved with Max Factor X featuring Bobby Carlos.

Now, I may never join a beauty pageant but Bobby's expertise as makeup artist to the country's beauty queens was something that got me piqued. His tips for looking flawless and camera-ready are super useful, especially when attending special events. Here's some free advice from the pro himself!

Tip #1: Use the dark shades in eyeshadow palettes to contour at the crease. Bobby says this is the secret to beauty queen-level peepers because it makes your eyes appear larger and more dramatic. Blend it with the lightest shade to keep them looking too harsh.

Tip #2: When applying eyeliner, where you start your line can make a huge difference in how it looks. For the upper lash line, always apply from the inside going out. For the lower lash line, apply from the outside going in.

Tip #3:  Bobby says Venus Raj uses three pairs of lashes while Shamcey Supsup prefers two layers! Big eyes are a must on stage so they can be seen from afar. For us normal people, Bobby says we should never skip curling our lashes. He recommends a three-step process that focuses on applying pressure at the base, middle and tip of the lashes for a more defined and longer lasting curl. Of course, you should also make sure to use a good quality eyelash curler to avoid accidentally ruining your lashes!

Tip #4: Applying mascara is just like building a house; you need to put down a good foundation first. Do not apply mascara all in one swipe because the product will just weigh down your curl. Start at the roots using the edge of the brush then work your way to the tips of the hair. Finally, apply all over with one swipe to lengthen.

Tip #5: Blush should always look as natural as possible, so its placement will vary depending on the shape and structure of your face. The easiest is to simply smile then apply along your cheekbones with a circular or infinity motion. Then use another lighter shade of blush to highlight for that dewy glow.

Bobby also shared a pro-MUA etiquette tip: the standard distance between a makeup artist and the client they're working on should be about brush length. This respects your client's personal space and keeps your work hygienic.

Of course, we got to play around with Max Factor X makeup and try the tips we learned from Bobby. My eyeliner game has improved with such a simple tip, and I'll never skip curling my lashes again!

There was so much more to see and experience at the Boot Camp, so I was glad I came prepared in a comfy outfit and sneakers! I spotted the Revia Hair Color station where the stylists can apply your newly-purchased hair color for you. This allows you to get a great new shade without the salon price tag or the hassle of having to apply the hair color yourself!

Céleteque and Detail MakeOver offered BDJ Bellas a chance to try out their products. I'd been curious about the latest releases from Céleteque since Kim wrote about their tenth anniversary, while I wanted to swatch Detail MakeOver line of matte lippies!

Ten lucky participants got to try Browhaus lash extensions for only P1000! Such a good deal! They also brought the products they distribute such as the My Amazing Blow Dry Secret line and Heavy Duty Bi-liners and HD Mascara that Liz swears is her current HG.

The Body Shop also had their own station and gave away free Love Your Body Membership Cards. Of course, I lined up for mine as having your own LYB Card gets you great deals at their store.

Bioderma had a big booth in the center of the beauty fair and was offering some really awesome deals where you could get a free full-sized product with minimum purchase! I was definitely tempted to try their famous micellar water, or the Sebium Global Cream and Pore Refiner for oily skin.

Indulge in CoverGirl Cosmetics and 70% off Sally Hansen polish.

Walk around with perfectly coiffed hair after a visit to Toni&Guy’s station.

Flawless entertained with a Spin-A-Wheel game and showcased their products.

I couldn't resist dropping by the K-Palette booth for all things eyebrows. Their Lasting 2-Way Eyebrow Liquid is still a top kilay pick here at PV, and it's got an even better formulation and more affordable price tag now!

Our favorite exfoliator, Cure Natural Aqua Gel, and the Baby Foot Peeling Mask (more effective and cheaper than getting a salon foot spa) were both on sale!

The BDJ Beauty Boot Camp was a great event for beauty lovers, and it’s a fun way to spend the weekend! Stay updated about their upcoming events by following them on Facebook!

The most basic skincare practice is washing your face. It helps you feel more awake in the morning, refreshes you when it's hot out, and rinses away the icky feel of accumulated oil and dirt. We normally wash our face twice a day: once in the morning and once in the evening. But consider this: how about washing your face with a cleanser just once a day?

This seemingly crazy idea flies in the face of everything we know about skin care, but it makes sense. Too much washing can be detrimental to your skin. Over-cleansing can cause dryness, which is a more pressing concern as we age. Washing, especially with soap-based cleansers, removes the protective acid mantle and leaves your skin vulnerable to bacteria. And that squeaky-clean feeling is actually a big no-no: it means you’ve stripped too much of the natural oils on your skin, leaving it more prone to flaking and irritation!

Sebum, the oily secretion from our skin’s sebaceous glands, serves to moisturize hair and skin. Even the oiliest of skin types still need a bit of sebum – after all, sebum serves as a protective barrier against pollutants, bacteria, and anything else that might cause an irritation.

So, if you’re going to wash your face only once a day, when would be the best time to do it?

Washing your face upon waking up generally removes bacteria and build-up that’s accumulated while sleeping but that shouldn’t be too much of a worry if you regularly change your bedding. At the end of the day though, your skin will be loaded with makeup, oil, and dirt so you should definitely make sure to do a thorough cleaning before hitting the sack! Also, those with extensive skincare regimens usually load up on products at nighttime, to enhance the natural effects of the body resting and regenerating itself. Cleansing at night preps the skin to receive the full benefits of any other products you apply after.

Of course, if you need to wear makeup for the day, you'll need an oil-free base. If you're not wearing makeup though it's not necessary to use facial wash; often, a quick rinse will be enough to clean your face.

(Liz's note: If I'm not leaving the house, I normally don't wash my face with cleanser until I do. A splash of water is all I need in the morning! It keeps my skin more, I don't know how to say it except that it feels nicer and more supple that way.)

When it comes to cleansers, you also have to find the right product for your skin type. Those with dry skin should opt for gentle, hydrating cleansers with a moisturizing cream base. For oily skin, foaming and gel cleansers should work best for you – look for these oil-controlling ingredients, too.

If you have acne-prone skin though, consider your regimen first. Some treatments must be applied on freshly-cleansed skin, so washing before you apply them is non-negotiable. To keep your skin from drying out, choose very gentle cleansers that maintain your skin's pH levels. Otherwise, you can check out cleansers with exfoliating ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid, which also double as acne fighters. You should never use ordinary body soaps regardless of your skin type – they're just too drying!

To maximize the effects of your facial cleanser and make sure you get rid of all the buildup, learn how to cleanse your face properly. It's a simple technique that can really change the state of your skin, and the massaging action feels good after a long day, too!

What’s your favorite cleanser for your skin type? Have you tried washing your face only once a day? How did that regimen work for you?

Staff Picks: Beauty trends we won't dare to try

compiled by Charlie Esmerna, contributor

Adventurous, daring, a mish-mash of styles. Call us what you may but the beauty enthusiasts in us all have a calling: to dip our toes (and tips), not just in the usual tropes of beauty, but also into the hip and trendy, the yet-to-be known, and the rediscovery of past hits. It's our job to test these out, see if they’re worth the hype, and share our thoughts. However, some trends seem so utterly ridiculous or even borderline dangerous that we're drawing the line and taking a hard pass.

(PS - No shade if you like these trends. They are simply not for us but enjoy them as you like! Ironically, or not.)

Liz: When I first saw the nail polish mountain making its rounds in the Internet, I was visually repelled. I think it's just meant to be funny and entertaining, like the other beauty "trends" that came before it. It's interesting to look at but yeah no I feel uncomfortable in the pit of my stomach just looking at it.

Den: Having natural freckles is fine and sometimes kinda cute, but drawing them on with makeup feels pretentious. It doesn't make sense to me, especially when I spend so much time trying to create a flawless base! The glitter version of this also just looks like someone got caught in a fight in kiddie art class.

Kim: Not to rub anyone the wrong way but I think colorful armpit hair is pretty ridiculous. I personally like being hairless on certain areas, underarms included. But if you think body hair is a natural thing that should be left alone, then you do you, sister! Dyeing it is where I draw the line, however. The skin on your underarm is even more sensitive than your face, and if fragrance products can cause armpit darkening, just think what the chemicals in a hair dye could do to the area!

Gett: I can't get on board with baking the under eye area. We've done a tutorial about it before, and while it looks good on camera, it's just too heavy and time-consuming to do for a daily look. I'd reserve this technique strictly for special occasions or photo sessions with extremely bright studio lights.

Rae: Unless I'm asked to try it out for PV, I probably won't attempt clown, tape, knife, and other forms of "crazy" contouring. It looks fun when I see people do it on YouTube but it takes so much time and work!

Marianne: Admittedly, glitter roots look really cute and almost magical on some people, but my scalp's already dry so I don't want any other stuff irritating it! Also, I'd hate having to pick out glitter from my head!

Jordianne: I generally don't follow beauty trends because I feel like they're all just gimmicky and not worth the time. The one I probably like the least and will never ever try would be the bubble nails trend (the unholy predecessor of nail polish mountain). It's so unpleasant to look at!

Angela: I will never do overdrawn eyebrows on myself. I think it makes you look angry! The whole look is just so unnatural to me.

Karla: Shaving off half your eyebrow so you can "draw" it several ways after is a NOOOO!!!!! :((

Crystal: I would never try having long, pointed nails. It looks so scary, like some kind of aswang.

Marielle: I have a "never say never" approach to beauty. I once said that I'd never do bold brows or contouring, but here I am! Right now though, I don't think I'm open to doing a vampire facial. All that blood on your face, even if it's from your own veins? Still sounds icky to me.

Stacie: I will never try rainbow hair or dip dye hair. Those look pretty on photographs, with the right background and styling, but for everyday? Nah.

Charlie: When I first watched a girl use the lip plumper tool on YouTube, I reckoned it was a torture device. She was on the verge of tears as she took it off! And while I wish for full lips, I can’t see myself using that tool. Ever. I'll stick with lip plumping glosses instead.

Sam: Nothing! One day I may find something I dislike appealing. As in, I hated makeup once upon a time and look where we are now. Identity and preferences are in a constant state of evolution, so really, I'll never know.

While the world of beauty continues to experiment and expand its wings, it’s inevitable for more trends to come out, no matter how unimaginable they might be. Nevertheless, to each his own—some trends just work for other people and others don’t. Following trends, after all, is a matter of personal principle and perspective.

See before and after: This Lashem serum gave me lusher brows and lashes

In a world obsessed with creating a flawless face base and collecting celebrity-endorsed lipsticks, lashes are often an overlooked part of the beauty routine. Sure, we press them in between curlers, coat them in waterproof mascara, and glue falsies onto them for the subtle yet gorgeous impact they make to our overall look.

But when you really think about it, these tiny hairs actually take on a lot of abuse from all those activities, not to mention being exposed to a lot of friction when we rub our eyes! That's why problems like brittle lashes and bald spots are actually quite common, even if we fail to notice them until a lot of damage has already occurred. Can a lash serum like Lashem All Eyes on You Lash & Brow Enhancing Serum (P3,600 at SM Beauty Makati) sweep in and save the day?

A sleek-looking silver tube houses this precious serum that promises to nourish and condition lashes and brows. I was expecting the typical mascara wand or perhaps a paddle applicator inside, but was surprised to find something like the brush of a fine-tipped liquid liner. It makes a lot of sense though: the serum is meant to be applied to the base of the lashes to stimulate new growth rather than coating the full-length of it like mascara. The thin, straight hairs on the wand also makes it easier to access sparser areas in the brows.

It wasn’t hard to incorporate the All Eyes on You Serum to my daily routine. The clear gel dries without any residue so it has no trouble going under makeup. It's easy enough to use that I was even able to apply without a mirror during lazy evenings when I just wanted to crash into bed. The ophthalmologist-tested formula didn’t cause any irritation to my eyes, even when the brush accidentally hit my eyeball. A few blinks and the momentary discomfort (mostly from getting my eye poked) soon disappeared.

So did this serum actually yield longer-looking lashes and fuller-looking brows? Take a look!

I’ve only been using it at night for some three weeks now, mostly because I don’t have the time to apply a lot of product in the morning. Even then, my brows and lashes do feel healthier and stronger because of the moisture from the serum. And you know what? My lashes look like they've grown a bit longer since started using Lashem! You'll need to look closely (pay attention to the left eye) to see the major difference.

Just one thing: I find it a little awkward to use the applicator for both the lashes and brows. I know that there are people out there who believe that using the same products for both lids and brows can cause some sort of contamination. Personally, I didn’t experience any irritation from using the serum on both areas, though I also prefer using All Eyes on You solely on my lashes. Other than that, I’m thrilled to experience a reversal of the effects of my more heavy-duty mascaras in addition to stronger, longer strands on my lashes and brows.

It’s definitely a splurge but if your lashes have experienced a fallout after getting extensions or your over-plucked brows never quite grew the same way, this can restore them to their former glory or better!

Would you try this serum? How do you care for your lashes?

Seven brands that broke our hearts when they left the PH

Our beauty-loving hearts beat a little faster whenever an international brand becomes available in Manila but some pull-outs have also left us in a state of despair. Okay, it's not that bad but we're definitely having a hard time getting over these brands leaving the country. Here are some of our faves that we now have to find alternative sources for!

Philosophy

This American brand used to be available in Beauty Bar, then pulled out, then came back with a couple of boutiques and a pop-up store. Their products were easily recognizable with their minimalist packaging and the uplifting quotes in every bottle. We've tried the Purity 3-in-1 cleanserAmazing Grace Spray Fragrance, and the tube version of Oprah Winfrey's favorite Hope in a Jar moisturizer. Currently, a limited selection of skin care is still available at selected Beauty Bars as well as Sephora.ph while fragrances may be found in department stores.

Paul and Joe

This French-Japanese brand used to be sold in Rustan’s department stores. Their intricately-designed packaging was nothing short of spectacular! Everything looked so gorgeous, it felt almost wrong to use the products and mar their perfection. If you wanna add some serious eye candy to your collection, you can find some of their products at beauty online stores that offer international shipping such as Beauty.com.

Heroine Make

This popular Japanese cosme brand used to be available in selected Watsons and SM Beauty stores. Their manga-inspired packaging added a fun Japanese feel to our vanities and we're seriously missing seeing them in drugstore beauty runs. What to do when our backups of their HG-quality mascaras run out? And we like their BB cream, too! If you're not heading to Japan anytime soon, you can get your fix at Sasa.com, which ships internationally.

Too Cool For School

This Korean brand just closed down earlier this year. Their quirky and occasionally dark packaging set them apart from the sea of mostly cutesy KBeauty cosmetics. They had a lot of interestingly conceptualized makeup, including the Dinoplatz Multibox U.F.O which is very popular in Korea. If you missed the chance to try this, some of their products are available online at Althea PH.

Pixy

This Indonesian makeup brand (but licensed by Mandom from Japan) was previously available in selected Watson’s and SM Beauty stores. Their Perfect Matte Two-Way Cake was (and is) one of the best and cheapest powder foundations we'd ever tried, but we'll probably have to ask friends going to Japan or Indonesia to pick up some refills.

Bloom Cosmetics

This Australian brand of makeup and organic skincare used be easily available in Beauty Bar stores. The packaging was simple but chic, and those of us in our mid-20s to early 30s fondly remember this as go-to makeup brand in high school and college! Our allowances went to collecting their lip glosses and eyeshadows, even though we barely knew anything about makeup. If you feel as nostalgic as we do, fret not, for Bloom Cosmetics ships internationally!

Citre Shine

This used to be easily available everywhere, including groceries. It became a big hit in the 90s, when everyone swore by the Anti-Frizz Serum as their favorite hair styling product. The brand seems to have fallen off the radar but there are a couple of listings for it on Amazon.

Are you missing any other brands that used to be available locally? We're so glad to have Origins back, and we're hopeful that other brands will also stage a comeback in the future!
