The Estee Lauder Pure Color Lipstick is like a silk slip for your lips

Gloomy days call for exceptional lipsticks. One of the best formulas out there is the Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Lipstick (P1,700) due to its full, creamy coverage that seems to hug the lips in a silky, moisturizing embrace. It has a lovely sweet fig scent which I find so elegant, and the bullet! Oh my, it feels so luxurious as it closes with a smooth magnetized click.

Now the Pure Color Envy Lipsticks actually come in several variants - there's the basic Lipstick with a creme finish, the ShineMatte, and Liquid Lip Potion. This August 20, they are coming out with the Hi-Lustre (P1,700)! This formula has fine metallic shimmers that lends it a lustrous frost finish, but we're not talking early 2000s frost here, ok. We're getting that modern metallic flash that looks sexy as it hits the light.

The Hi-Lustre has Pure Color Envy's signature ultra-buttery texture that melts on the lips almost instantly, and dries down into a comfortable layer of color. It sticks on the lips for a good 4-5 hours and doesn't require lip balm as primer.

The Hi-Lustre shade I have, Slow Burn, is a rich sienna red with subtle, fine gold frost. It's not spackly at all as you can see in the swatch. The other shades I swatched here are two Pure Color Lipsticks I have also recently acquired - Rebellious Rose, a brightening rosy best-seller, and Irresistible, a mauvey brown that a trendsetter like Kendall Jenner will not hesitate to wear.

Just to shake things up, I decided to show you an ombre lip wearing Impulsive (a pink nudey creme also from the PCE line) as base with Slow Burn blended on the inner lips. I love the seamless gradation of the two shades! Just goes to show how creamy these tubes of color are. <3

A note: these lippies are delicate so you might want to store them in a cool corner of your office or home. They are so creamy that they can melt easily, which in fact happened (partially) to my tube of PCE last year. Keep them in the fridge if you don't mind. Otherwise, I think you'll love these lipsticks if you want something that's both luxurious and beautiful on your lips!

Hope you're having a great Monday! There are no classes everywhere due to the monsoon but as it happens, it's not even raining at all. There's just this gloom which I hope this lipstick review was able to lift, even for a little bit. ;)

What are your rights as a consumer? Here's what to do in case of a bad buy

by Sam Gonzales, contributor

As much as we love shopping for makeup, we’ve experienced our fair share of mishaps: broken powders, expired products, dried up formulas, and even botched beauty services. It’s annoying AF but sometimes, stuff happens and things just don’t work out. How do you react when these Series of Unfortunate Events take place? Do you complain and ask for a replacement? Do you suck it up and grieve over the loss of makeup and money? Or do you lawyer up?

We talked to lawyer and Project Vanity's corporate secretary Atty. Maria Concepcion A. Gloria-Rubio to give us a guide on what the law says about our rights as consumers.

Situation: Your skin reacts badly to a product or service

We’ve heard about foreign lawsuits and complaints against cosmetics and skincare companies for things like shady labeling, laser hair removal burns, and making false claims claims, but how would these situations pan out in the PH?

Atty. Gloria-Rubio says that while it is possible to take action over products and procedures that cause injuries, it’s going to be a tough battle. “You would likely be hard pressed to find medico-legal support because medico-legal experts are rare in the country, and it is the experience of the legal community that the medical community tends to avoid testifying on medico-legal matters.” Aside from being hard to find, medico-legal services can be pretty expensive, but it would be difficult to support such claims without their expertise.

Nevertheless, you can and should still take action if you believe that you have been wronged. Gloria-Rubio advises that aside from pursuing court proceedings, you can actually make a complaint at the administrative level. Complaints filed to government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) won’t cost a centavo, and you won’t be “as tied up by red tape or procedure.”

Situation: The seller refuses to refund or exchange a damaged item

The package you’ve been losing sleep over finally arrived but the powders you ordered are broken! Or you purchase a sealed item only to discover that it’s already dried up or broken when you finally open it up after getting home from the store. Before you allow the mixture of disappointment and anger and sadness to take over, gather the proofs of your purchase (receipts, bank deposit slips, transaction reports. Will the seller replace your item? They should.

According to the Consumer Act of the Philippines, the words “No Return, No Exchange” shouldn’t even be seen anywhere in a store. As long as the product has a defect and the error is on the store’s side, they should replace the product or offer a refund (whether it’s a replacement or a refund depends on the store’s policy).

And if the salesperson tells you that they cannot take your items back, Atty. Gloria-Rubio says that you shouldn’t be dealing with the salespeople. “They have supervisors or managers…there shouldn't be a distinction [between online and in-counter transactions]. The law doesn't distinguish,” and if they still tell you that they can’t (or won’t) take their product back, you can report them to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) or the FDA.

Of course that will work with registered businesses, which brings us to our next dilemma...

Situation: You’ve been duped by an online merchant

It gets trickier when you’re dealing with unregistered online sellers. Seeing as online scams are the most complained about cybercrime in the Philippines, we need to stress that to get out of these situations, don’t place yourself in potentially risky situations to begin with. The DTI warns online shoppers from products that are priced way too low (like the infamous “SG Authentic” makeup), sellers who have poor ratings, sellers who ask you to pay directly to their bank account or money transfer, and websites that have little to no information about their contact details or location. If you absolutely want to purchase something from a stranger, ask for two valid IDs first as proof of identity and make sure to check out our tips for identifying fake products.

But if you’ve already been bamboozled by a seller, report them to the Philippine National Police - Anti-Cybercrime Group*, and hopefully they will get arrested for their dastardly deeds. Atty. Gloria-Rubio also says to warn other buyers by “[rating] them if applicable and posting about the experience.”

And yes, even posting about it on Facebook can help. “Social media has ironically forced companies to pay attention to these matters. If you want instant results, take down names and tell them you'll post on social media,” Atty. Gloria-Rubio advises. The rise of social media has put the pressure on companies to actually respond to your queries and complaints that would otherwise be ignored by customer service, lest they be deemed Undesirable No. 1 by the online community.

It can be quite a hassle but when you purchase a product or pay for a service that fails to deliver, you should always speak up. Aside from helping you to get what you paid for, it improves things for yourself and for others as well. “I strongly advocate customers to seek redress in these situations,” Atty. Gloria-Rubio states. “We are mostly to blame that businesses have such bad customer service. The Filipino concepts of ‘hiya’ and ‘tiis’ contribute to the retardation of business accountability and the ‘puwede na’ mentality. They have cost us our place in the international market for decades, and we're still not up to scrap.”

Discuss:

  • Has any of the situations above happened to you? How did you deal with it?
  • Do you chalk it up to experience or take steps to remedy the matter?

Gradient freaks will love this: The Laneige Two Tone Lip and Shadow Bar

$

Most Filipinas go for the Western makeup style. Just look at any artista on local TV and you'll see the arched brows, darkened eyes, full lips, and matte foundation which are the hallmarks of Hollywood makeup. It's a great look, one that I prefer myself, but recently I have been enthralled with the magic of the Korean makeup style. I've been watching a couple of new K-dramas* and I'm loving the subtlety of their look! Their face appears so innocent and natural, but in fact they use A LOT of product to look like they're barely wearing any.

I've also been watching a lot of Korean makeup tutorials and noticed a couple of key things:

  • They love gradient lips because it's more childlike, as if they just sucked at a lollipop.
  • Shimmer on the eyes is a given. The only question is - how shimmery is it going to be? They seem to favor peach and orange on their eyes as much as they like brown.

If you want to cop the look, you should check out the Laneige Two Tone Bars. There are 10 Lip Bars and four Shadow Bars with two colors combined in each stick. It's meant to achieve a smooth gradient while getting you the precision you need around your lips and eyes! Looks cool no? I thought it'd be hard to use, but it's pretty easy once I got the hang of it.

Let's begin with the Laneige Two Tone Lip Bar (P1,200). This comes in bright cheery colors that seem to jump out of the lips - none of those dark brooding mauves and pinks the Americans have been coming out with! I love the change of pace, but more than that, the formula is pretty good. They're pigmented in one swipe and can be worn different ways. You can achieve the gradient effect (dark inside, light outside and vice versa) or wear it as one color by combining the two.

This feels thin on the lips; it's not waxy at all. I normally don't need a balm underneath but you might if you have dry lips! It stays on for about 3-4 hours and leaves a nice stain afterwards (the deeper shades).

It's pretty straightforward to use. For the gradient lip, I do it in half sections. I place the bar in the middle of my lips then swipe it right, going outwards. Then, back to the middle then swipe left going outwards. For a single color lip, I just kind of flip the bar to get the color on my whole lips.

I've got four colors here:

  • No. 13 Orange Blurring, a popsicle orange with a white strip. If you intend to use it as a gradient, make sure the outer parts of your lips have concealer first on to maximize the lipstick's effect.
  • No. 11 Juicy Pop, a coral pink with a yellow strip. The yellow actually doesn't look weird! But it's not very obvious since it's sheer.
  • No. 14 Dear Pink, a bright pink with a lighter pink strip. Love this color, it's so cheerful! This is the closest to my ideal Korean gradient lip.
  • No. 12 Maxi Red is an intense red with a light peach strip. This is the most staining out of the four I have.
laneige 2.jpg
laneige.jpg
laneige 3.jpg
laneige 5.jpg

I like No. 14 and No. 12 for that gradient look since they make my lips appear full and fun (the lighter strips are pigmented too), but I'd use No. 13 and No. 11 as one color since they make my lips look smaller than I like. Alone, they're a gorgeous glossy orange and coral respectively! I love these lipsticks and will definitely keep them around for when I want to do a Korean FOTD - which is now all the time, seriously. Highly recommend these lippies!

And so we come to the Laneige Two Tone Shadow Bars (P1,200). These are beautiful shimmery cream shadows for the eyes, in trendy shades that look great on monolids. I love how they are designed to simplify eye makeup by applying two colors at the same time.

I've got all four available shades here:

  • No. 1 Humming Coral is a matte peachy coral with a shimmery champagne beige strip. It's the eyeshadow I was wearing with the lip swatches above!
  • No. 3 Orange Island is a coppery orange with a white gold strip.
  • No. 2 Golden Rose is a prim rose gold with a white gold strip.
  • No. 4 Coffee Bronze is pretty descriptive; it has a shimmery champagne strip.

Gorgeous, right? But they can do better as eye shadows. They are so emollient that they crease on my crease very quickly. I've used it on top of my primer and I've set them with a matching eyeshadow, but they still crease unfortunately. I think they're meant to work much better in cooler weather and on monolids!

I like No. 4 Coffee Bronze the most since it's not as emollient as the other three shades. The rest I plan to use as highlighters since I hate to put great colors to waste. ^_^

I hope you enjoyed reading my review! Let's discuss:

  • How do you feel about the Korean makeup look in general?
  • Are you into gradient lips?
  • What are your top picks from the Laneige Two Tone Bar collection?

How to DIY your own cushion compact using products you already have

$

Cushion compacts are currently the cutting edge in base makeup innovation. They’re the more mobile version of the double-letter cream due to their mirrored cases and convenient sponge applicator. They also have the skincare part all figured out with moisturizing, pore-refining and even anti-aging ingredients. Finally, they have a lightweight formula that feels comfy even in humid weather!

It may all sound complex, but it's actually easy to make your own bespoke cushion compact blend. You get to decide how much coverage you get, the skincare benefits you want, and most importantly, match the shade to your skin tone. You don't even have to buy anything new since you could just use a few products you already have on hand! Here's how.

For this project, you will need:

Empty cushion compact case - If you have an old, empty one sitting at home, don’t toss it just yet! Just give it a good soak and rinse before you re-use it. Take out the sponge in the compact as well as the applicator. Was both until all traces of makeup is gone, soak it in dishwashing fluid and water (1:1 ratio is good) for a few hours, then do a final rinse. If you don't want to deal with the hassle though, Althea Korea sells empty cushion cases. We got ours for just P235 including the applicator but you can also buy it separately.

BB cream and/or foundation - Choose a thick, full coverage formula so that you can gradually thin it out with the other liquids. You’ll have more control of the coverage that way! This is also a good opportunity to use up shade match fails; I had one that was slightly lighter and another that was slightly darker so I mixed them together. Otherwise, use one that’s in your exact shade.

Liquid SPF (optional) - If you want to simplify your routine even more, you can add some SPF in the formula. Do note that it may not be enough for full sun protection! If you want to create a tinted SPF product then you can use your liquid as the base instead of foundation.

Liquid illuminator (optional) – If you like that dewy K-beauty glow, this is a must! Go for something with with fine shimmer instead of spackly glitters.

Face oil – You can also use a serum or an ampoule as long as it’s oil-based, otherwise you may have trouble getting the final product to combine. If you're using water-based foundations though, you can go for a water-based skincare product such as gel moisturizers or serum.

Small bowl – Please make sure it's disinfected!

Plastic spoon or spatula – Also disinfect these before using.

NoteTake the steps below as a guide to formulating your own cushion formula. It’s not an exact recipe as proportions will vary depending on the products you use and the effect you want to create. We recommend starting with a small amount and testing your proportions before whipping up a big batch to fill your cushion.

Step 1: Pump BB cream and/or foundation into the clean bowl. Start with the thickest consistency and add thinner ingredients as you go along. The BB cream/foundation will also serve as your base ingredient. One tablespoon is roughly 15ml, and an average cushion compact would have that much liquid in it. I think it could hold more though, say up to 20ml. It's safe to go with a tablespoon's worth of BB cream/foundation before to start with.

You may add SPF at this point.

Step 2: Add the illuminator. If you prefer a dewy glow, add about ¼ or ⅓ of the total amount of product in the bowl. You may also skip this step if you prefer a more matte finish.

Step 3: Drop in some face oil. The oil (or gel) significantly thins the formula out and adds additional skincare properties, but don’t go overboard! One to two drops is enough because just a little bit of this stuff already goes a long way. Start with a single drop and mix it in well before adding the second drop, so you avoid making your cushion too runny and greasy.

Step 4: Swatch and test. Use the back of your hand to test consistency and your jawline to test color compatibility.

Step 5: Make adjustments where needed. Mine came out lighter than what I wanted, so I added a pump of darker foundation. You can also adjust the amounts of other ingredients, making sure to swatch and test after each addition.

Step 6: Pour the mixture into the bottom of your cushion case, then place the sponge on top.  To get the product to permeate the sponge, press down on it with clean fingers or use your spatula or spoon. And voila!

My concoction has sheer to medium buildable coverage. It takes two to three layers to get rid of redness and fade out dark spots. Longevity is average at about four hours before I had to touch up my nose and chin, but I don’t mind since the compact is so easy to bring everywhere I go. In the photo below, I did half my face using the DIY Cushion. You can see it on your left.

Left is with my DIY cushion foundation, right is without

Awesome, right? I like how it makes my face brighter and more lifted, not to mention the additional care it gives my skin. I definitely recommend trying this out but if you prefer to just purchase a ready-made one, check out our list of great cushion foundation finds!

Me, My Selfie and I: Five tips on how to #UpYourSelfieGame

by Karla Aguas, contributor

Let’s face it: we live in a world where selfies are basically the new calling card. They flood all our social media accounts, making them practically impossible to avoid. We even post  #wokeuplikethis photos when in reality, it took 30 minutes, 5,000 shots, 20 different angle changes, eight poses, and three different filters to get that perfect Instagram post. Not so effortless.

But hey, it's fun and it's great to get a few (or in some cases, thousands) of likes to feel a boost of confidence. Having perfect selfies isn't exactly a necessity, of course, but it is nice to be able to immortalize a day when you felt pretty damn fine.

So, how do celebs do it? Why are they slaying the #SelfieGame, posting shot after shot of complete gorgeousness and angle perfection? We asked a few personalities if they'd be willing to share their secrets to the perfect selfie. This is what we found!

A photo posted by CHRISTIANA COLLINGS-CANLAS (@christianacollings) on

Tip#1: Find the light

Christiana Collings is no stranger to the Instagram world because of her amazing shots and Pinterest-worthy feed. With a fun, spunky attitude and gorgeous face, it’s no wonder that she has over 68,000 followers on her account. When I asked her about her secret she said: “The secret to a perfect selfie is definitely the lighting!”

Oh how true! Lighting plays a big part of how your selfies are going to turn out. Natural light is the best form of light, as it is bright enough to enhance the colors and pick up all the details but soft enough to blur those pores. Plus, it makes editing and adding filters easier.

How about night-out selfies though? The solution lies in phone cases that have external LED lighting so that you can still take great selfies even in the dark. Christiana reveals that she bought a LuMee case over four months ago for her phone and hasn’t taken it off since.

Tip #2: Know your angle

Another great tip for acing that perfect selfie? You need to know which pose makes you look your best. As blogger and model Jackie Go says in her blog, “Use natural light and find your angle!”

It’s important to note which angle of your face is most flattering for a shot because not only does it save you time from taking a million takes but it also ensures that you will be more confident with your selfie. Not sure what your angle is? Use your camera to take shots of your face from the left and the right side, and then compare the photos and see which one looks better. Being able to angle your body is another great tip to nailing that perfect selfie. The quarter angle is the most flattering way to position your body, and keeping your arms away from your torso helps them look slimmer. It may feel a little awkward to hold an unnatural pose but it looks better and you get used to it with practice. Take it from Jackie: once you’ve got your angle down, your selfies will definitely be fiercer.

Tip #3: Apply some filters

No matter how well we take our selfies, sometimes they need a little help from apps and filters. When I asked actress, artist, former VJ, model and designer Heart Evangelista-Escudero about her secrets to taking and posting the perfect selfie, she revealed, “Insta size it, add a little Chrome filter, and keep your hands steady!”

Wise words from one of the most beautiful faces in the country! With over 1.1 million followers on Instagram to back up her tips, Heart definitely is on to something when it comes to adding a little extra before hitting the post button. The key to keeping the balance and quality of your selfies is also to not go overboard when it comes to filters. By adjusting the level of the filter, you are able to compliment the original photo and give it that extra kick. Also, make sure to avoid any blurry shots! InstaSize: Android | iOS

Tip #4: Use a photo editing app

Another well-loved and often used app is Snapseed. Fashion blogger Vern Enciso swears, “I love Snapseed because it’s easier to correct color with!”

Whether you need to reduce the redness of your skin or enhance the color of your clothes and makeup, Snapseed allows you to sharpen, edit and recolor your pictures. It offers more options than what's available on the Instagram app, so you can edit photos to perfection. Snapseed: Android | iOS

Tip #5: Touch up some makeup

Need a brighter lip, pinker cheeks, or fuller brows? The Facetune app allows you to put on makeup, AFTER you've already taken your photos. It's not a free download but it is definitely worth every peso you spend. Ever wondered how people get those perfectly white flat lays? Or take super detailed pictures using just their cellphones? Well, Facetune has all of those features and more! It has a Whiten tool (can be used for flat lays and background shots, others use it to whiten their teeth), Detail Enhancement tool (perfect for those crisp shots), and even a Patch tool to aid in reducing skin redness and blotchiness. All About Acids: Why you seriously need them on your face

$

by Claire Reyes, contributor

If you’ve ever watched a local telenovela, you’ve probably heard the kontrabida threaten the female lead with “tapunan ko ng asido ang mukha mo!” I totally understand that it brings up crazy fears of disfigurement, but do hear me out! If somebody had told my teenage self that I’d willingly put acid on my skin, I would have laughed (nervously), too. Little did I know that a lot of common skin care products contain acids, which contribute to healthy skin. It’s in everything: facial washes, toners, serums, moisturizers, even hair products and intimate care items! Here are a few and how they benefit our skin.

Meet the different types of acid

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) typically work by removing dead skin cells from the skin’s uppermost layers. Since they exfoliate the skin's surface, they can definitely help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and minor blemishes like sun spots. You might be surprised to find out that the most common AHA’s is acetic acid, also known as vinegar! Among its variants, apple cider vinegar seems to be the most popular in the beauty world, with many beauty uses. There is also raspberry vinegar, the star ingredient in hair rinses like Yves Rocher’s éclat radiance formula.

Lactic acid is one of the mildest AHA’s around, making it ideal for sensitive skin, including the genital area. It’s the key ingredient (and name inspiration) for the Lactacyd brand of feminine washes. Citric acid is present in fruits like lemons, oranges and calamansi but can be too harsh when applied directly to the skin, so skin care products containing this are safer than applying the fruit's juice topically. When it comes to professionally applied peeling methods though, dermatologists usually favor glycolic acid because it has the smallest particles, letting it penetrate deeper into the skin. Aside from triggering collagen regeneration, it also helps even out skin tone and strengthen the epidermis and dermis, making it a great anti-aging treatment.

Yup. Every one of these products contain some form of acid.

Yup. Every one of these products contain some form of acid.

The most commonly known and used Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) is salicylic acid. Most anti-acne products have included this in their formulations and no wonder—it is able to dive right through clogged pores to effectively dislodge comedones and dry up pimples.

We’ve become big believers in kojic acid since we started using Kojie-san because of how effective it was at lightening and evening our skin tone. If you’re wondering about the odd name, it’s derived from the Japanese word for “mushroom”, which is where this acid comes from.

Retinoic acid has some incredible properties: aside from providing powerful exfoliation, it also makes fine lines disappear by filling in the dermis. However, this is ingredient has become controversial because some studies assert that it has toxic side effects. This probably stems from the fact that retinoic acid is a form of vitamin A, and users may exceed the recommended the recommended dietary allowance (RDA). Adding to the confusion, this acid is sometimes used interchangeably with retinol (the whole Vitamin A molecule, of which retinoic acid is merely a component) and tretinoin (a concentrated, prescription-only form of retinol).

While most other acids focus on the ability to exfoliate or remove unwanted impurities, hyaluronic acid stands out because of its ability to hydrate skin. This acid naturally occurs in our bodies but decrease as we get older. Many beauty supplements feature hyaluronic acid as the star ingredient because of its potential for anti-aging effects.

Which acids should you be using?

All skin types can benefit from AHAs since these provide gentle exfoliation. Keep a look out for those acids in the ingredients list when shopping for a facial wash or toner.

Those with combination/oily and acne-prone skin would benefit from essences or creams with salicylic acid. It’s also a great ingredient to look for when shopping for acne spot treatments.

Anyone who wants to combat aging should consider glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, and (with a doctor’s prescription) retinoic acid.

If you’re looking to lighten your skin tone, kojic acid is a great, effective and usually inexpensive option.

Those with sensitive skin would have to be careful though—try out the products first whenever possible, and never on the face. If there are no issues, ramp up the use gradually from once a week to as often as needed.

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding and experiencing skin issues, first make sure to avoid applying cosmetics that can potentially harm your baby! Salicylic and retinoic acids are major no-no’s but you can consider trying AHAs for those inexplicable dark spots, acne, and other blemishes that crop up but as always, we recommend checking with your doctor first.

How to use acids safely

  • You'll know that the AHA is working through your skin if you feel a slight tingle. It shouldn't sting or feel too uncomfortable; there's just enough of a sensation to let you know that the product is effective.
  • If you have sensitive skin, AHAs are actually a better exfoliation option compared to scrubs, which can cause tears and abrasion because of the rough surface. Do a spot test first before applying to a bigger area, so you can check if your skin can handle it.
  • Layering skin care can work wonders for your skin, but it's not a good idea to be using too many acids at the same time. Peeling acids like AHAs slough away the top layers of the skin, leaving it soft but more prone to irritation. Also, using a product with vitamin C becomes useless if used with AHAs, as the latter destabilizes its pH level.
  • In the same way, acid peels and mixes are not one of those things that you should DIY. Better to leave this to the experts. Acids can do awesome things for the skin, but when things go wrong, it can be difficult to undo the damage.
  • First-time users should take baby steps before adding acids to their skin care regimen. Do a spot test on your arm and your neck before using it on your face. Observe for any stinging, redness or itchiness in the tested area. Always follow the directions for use on any product with acid listed in its ingredients. If it says it’s safe for everyday use, start slowly (maybe once or twice a week) and eventually build up to daily use.

There are many more different kinds of skin care acids and these are just some of the most common ones. Have you tried products that contain acids? How did they work for you? Which ones do you plan on trying next?

Love: The Bobbi Brown Highlighting Powder in Afternoon Glow

The Bobbi Brown Highlighting Powder in Afternoon Glow (P2,650) is the kind of product that makeup junkies live and die for. It's a beautiful champagne bronze highlighter with a fine, fine texture and a quiet intensity that catches the light just so. It looks like you took a breathtaking afternoon by the mountains and poured it into a pan! It's part of Bobbi's new Sunset Pink Collection inspired by the soft twilight in Telluride, Colorado - it's the kind of light that bathes everything it touches in a warm glow.

Now this highlighter is expensive and not something that's an absolute "need", but it's worth the price tag as with most Bobbi Brown products. The true mark of a good highlighter is when it only flashes in certain angles; it shouldn't look like you have headlights on your face no matter where you turn. Afternoon Glow only shows up when the light hits it. When I face a person straight, it doesn't look like I have shiny dirt on! Part of it is the application technique, but it's also the product and how complex and fine the pigments are.

I just really pat this on with my fingers. I love it on my upper lids, lower lids, waterline, cheek bones, middle bridge of the nose, and the bow of the lips. It's a bit too pigmented for the brow bone but everywhere else it imparts a natural glow that's effortlessly diffused. You may use a fan brush or even something like the MAC217 but I'm happy with the pigmentation and precision I get with just fingers.

In this look, I wore Afternoon Glow on the upper lids, lower lids, cheek bones, middle bridge of the nose, and the bow of the lips. It's a great multi-use product that can carry a simple look like this up a few notches!

In this look, I wore Afternoon Glow on the upper lids, lower lids, cheek bones, middle bridge of the nose, and the bow of the lips. It's a great multi-use product that can carry a simple look like this up a few notches!

Staying power is pretty good! It barely fades on my cheek bones and takes about 5-6 hours before it comes off my eyes. It doesn't fall apart easily with a little sweat and oil, but as with all powders, a few hours of wear will cause it to fade. Afternoon Glow is a great highlighter nonetheless, one I will definitely recommend to highlighter lovers and collectors. ^_^

I also have the Sheer Color Cheek Tint in Sheer Lilac (P1,650) from the Sunset Pink Collection. It's a cream blush that makes my cheeks look like I just worked out for an hour. It looks more like a stain, but it feels like a cream. In any case it's a hydrating cheek color for those who need moisture there.

If you're oily though, you might prefer a powder blush instead. I do like the effect and effortless application (blending is a breeze) but it isn't something I'd wear if I want the color to stay all day. It's a great cheek choice for no makeup makeup days; it even works as a sheer lip color since it feels like a balm.

So there you go! ^_^ Let me know what you think of these new releases!

Hate liquid foundation? We've got 9 picks to change your mind

Liquid foundation: arguably the most tricky product to work with due to the wide variety of colors, finishes, and formulas. We get why it can feel frustrating. Maybe you don’t like the icky feeling of flesh-toned goo on your skin. Maybe you don’t like that mask-like look. But maybe, you also want your skin to be even and look healthy without the unpleasantness you thought was a given.

We ask you to reconsider. Formulations have come a long way and beauty companies do cater to those of us who don’t like traditional foundation. From foundation that doesn’t feel like foundation, to formulas that will make your skin look like your skin, here are our picks for foundation for people who hate foundation!

Skin is in: If you just want to even out your skin tone and enhance the beauty of your skin, celebrate! Foundation that does just that exists. These liquids have natural coverage that hides minor blemishes and creates a smooth canvas with minimal effort.

Maybelline Super BB Cushion (P749, department stores)

If you loved the Super BB Cream then you’re going to love the convenience of the new Maybelline Super BB Cushion. With a couple of taps you can achieve a healthy dewy complexion that looks lit from within. The cushion compact packaging also makes it convenient for touch-ups. Suitable for dry to combination skin, it actually sets (or adjusts) to your skin after application. Shades are limited though, and the darkest shade 03 Natural Beige will suit those with NC35 skin tones.

Happy Skin Second Skin Créme (P1,199, Happy Skin counters)

This foundation will cover blemishes and discoloration with just one layer but still leaves the skin looking like skin. And since it’s silicone-free, those with allergies or sensitive skin can will love having this option. There are only two shades available but Happy Skin formulates its products for Filipina complexions.

MAC Face and Body Foundation (P1,900, MAC counters)

This water-based foundation has a unique texture that initially feels watery then thickens upon massaging into the skin. You won't feel it once it's on, and it sets waterproof while keeping a natural, dewy finish that lasts all day without feeling uncomfortable. The best part is that it’s buildable, which means you can opt for light coverage for everyday use or fuller coverage for special occasions. There’s a reason why this is a staple in many a makeup artist kit. It comes in 11 shades and multiple undertones, too, so it won’t be hard to find a match.

Pro tip:: Shake the bottle well and massage in with fingers or a flat foundation brush to get the best texture!

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water (~P2,200 at Beauty Bar)

Packed with antioxidants and SPF 30, this watery BB cream offers coverage and comfort even to the end of your day. The sheer coverage diminishes fine lines and pores, and leaves the skin with a satin finish. It functions like a skin tint, with eight flexible shade options, and it seems invisible to the eye but improves the overall look of your skin. It is also sweat-proof, transfers only slightly, and lasts 6-8 hours on combination skin: great properties for such a thin consistency

Make Up For Ever Water Blend Foundation (P2,700 at MUFE stores)

This new release replaces Make Up For Ever’s Face and Body Foundation with an 80% water formula that really gives the sheerest coverage while leaving the skin with a fresh, brightening glow. It truly feels like nothing on the skin, and may be better suited for those who are comfortable with almost nothing on. The great thing about this foundation though is that as time passes, the texture improves (as opposed to breaking down) when the natural oils of the face merges with the formula. It comes in 20 shades, and is best massaged in with clean fingers or flat brushes. Sponges may soak up the product.

Maximum but lightweight cover: Need coverage but hate that thick, heavy feeling? You can have an even and flawless complexion without sacrificing comfort.

Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft Matte Foundation (P490, department stores)

This affordable foundation looks quite thick but actually feels like nothing on the skin. Its soft-matte finish truly looks like velvet when applied, with medium-buildable coverage, and reduces lines and the appearance of pores. This texture lends to its versatility as it can be worn by those with dry to combination skinl. However, it may need to be set with a little powder if you want to take its (very) subtle sheen away — it’s claimed to be a hydrating soft-matte after all. It comes in 12 shades and can be applied with fingers, brushes, or sponges.

L’Oreal Paris True Match Liquid Foundation (P600, department stores)

This drugstore foundation performs just as well or even better than a lot of high-end products! It provides medium to full coverage but retains a satin finish. Set with powder, it is suitable for longer wear and special occasions. The best part is that it lasts while not feeling like a total face mask. It’s the perfect balance of reliable and beautiful, and comes in 18 shades and multiple undertones so finding a color match shouldn't be a problem.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Makeup To Go Liquid Compact (P1,950, Estée Lauder store and counters)

This dewy, hydrating formula offers sheer to medium coverage, which is perfect for everyday. It’s also great for traveling as its compact packaging makes allows it to be easily transported, even through TSA checks. It dispenses the exact amount one needs to use with its soft, dense sponge. The dewy (but not shiny finish) makes it suitable for those who have dry to combination skin, and it has enough staying power to still look good after ten hours with touch-ups. Shade-matching should not be difficult either with 18 options. It really is just a great option for someone who’s looking for convenience with quality.

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD (P2,700, MUFE stores)

We’ve raved about the natural finish of this foundation before but it warrants a mention for emphasis! Ultra HD was formulated for — what else — ultra HD resolution, but the special thing about the formula is that it’s suitable for every day wear as well. Considering that this formula is TV-quality, it's not at all thick or cakey. It’s available in 40 shades and multiple undertones,  and when blended, it looks exactly like your skin albeit color-perfected.

Five skin care finds you should try from Proud Mary

$

When I first heard about the K-beauty craze, I was admittedly very skeptical. How do you even consider trying a brand you'd never heard of, much less one with product labels you can't even read? One Leaders mask and several episodes of Beautiology later, I was hooked and hell-bent on getting more Korean skin care products to try in a bid to achieve that coveted dewy glow!

The brands I found in the mall actually work great and have found their way into both my skincare and makeup routines, but when I heard that we now have high-end Korean products locally available through About Face PH, I couldn't help but feel intrigued. If the mass market stuff already work wonders, imagine what more a premium brand can do!

I was thrilled to learn that Proud Mary is produced by a cosmeceutical company. They are a "derma technology brand" that works very closely with skin specialists, which makes me feel that their products feature more cutting edge technology and higher expertise. I also loved that their packaging features English text so I could actually read the ingredients and instructions for use! And in case you were wondering, they've been featured in K-dramas such as Come Back Mister, I Have A Lover, Divorce Lawyer In Love, and My Heart Twinkle Twinkle. Here are five products that I would definitely recommend trying out from their line:

Mild Sun Block Shake PA+++ SPF50+ (P1,299)

I actually started wearing sunscreen early because my mom warned me of getting freckles if I didn't, but I hate the sticky, oily feeling it leaves on my face. Thanks to this lightweight liquid formula though, I am no longer guilty of going out with no UV protection on, even on muggy days! It spreads easily, sits well under makeup, and doesn't have that funny sunscreen smell. I feel like it's actually absorbed by my skin as opposed to just sitting on top of it, and it doesn't give me that unflattering shine so I imagine that even oily-skinned gals can use this. It's supposed to have plant extracts that make it gentle enough even for sensitive skin, and I do find it moisturizing enough to use on its own. True to its promise, there is no dreaded white cast!

StemS Renewal Age Control Serum (P1,399)

At the grand old age of 32, I figured it was about time I added an anti-aging product to my regimen; it's supposed to be preventive, not corrective after all. And if I'm to make up for any lost time, a potent serum would definitely fit the bill. The star ingredients for this include extracts from snow lotus, black ginseng, grape and... dragon's blood. I'm not kidding: it's a real plant but the name alone makes me feel pretty badass about patting this onto my face. It doesn't smell like anything, and because it's water-based, it simply sinks into my skin with no oily residue. The 50ml bottle contains a lot of product for something you only need a couple of drops of, so I'll post an update about how well the age control works in about a century.

4Nº Nutrition Complex Ampoule series (P999 each)

As their brand philosophy indicates, Proud Mary is about creating specialized skin care solutions for every concern. There are four ampoule variants: Hyaluron (for extremely dry skin), Azulene (for sensitive and irritated skin), Vita C (for blemished and discolored skin), and EGF (for wrinkle care and anti-aging). I'm currently using the EGF variant, which I pat on after applying the serum. It feels a little heavier and more potent than the serum, and has a very subtle scent that disappears quite quickly. It contains Adenosine to help improve skin elasticity. I don't really have wrinkles yet but I've noticed my skin looking brighter since I started using this, which I did before starting on the serum.

4Nº Energy Ampoule Mask packs (P125 each)

If you're not ready to commit to a full-sized bottle of ampoule though, I suggest trying these mask versions first. Get one of each and see which one works best for your skin! The masks are very wet so you'll have a bit of that ampoule goodness leftover to use for a few days. This is also a great alternative to packing delicate glass bottles if you'll be traveling!

Animal Mask packs (P125 each)

They make look cutesy but these IG-worthy sheet masks pack quite a punch! I tried the Anti-aging Horse Oil variant (I'm going to be young forever! LOL) simply because I've been intrigued about the Korean obsession for horse fat in skin care. There are more "traditional" variants for removing sebum and pore blockage (Monkey), whitening and moisturizing (Panda), and wrinkle-fighting collagen (Tiger). Rest assured, there are no weird animal smells here, just that usual vaguely floral scent you get from most sheet masks.

My top picks are definitely the sunscreen and the ampoule, though the serum gets plus points for including such an interesting ingredient. I'm loving how soft and bright my skin's been so far!

If you haven't tried high-end Korean skin care yet (or any Korean skin care products at all), Proud Mary is part of About Face PH's ongoing sale! Make sure to get your K-beauty fix before the sale ends and before stocks run out.

Get a deep cleansing facial on a student budget

Do you ever have those days when you miss your younger self? I get a lot of those. It can be hard to appreciate how good you have it when you're an angsty teenager (I know I did!) but compared to worrying about making the right career moves and having enough to pay the bills, flunking a quiz and getting my crush to notice me seem pretty easy. But one thing I DON'T miss about my teenage years are the ugly breakouts! Now that I know better about taking care of myself though, I've realized that one of the causes of acne was poor (okay, practically nonexistent) skin care.

Compounded with the fact that I commuted to school when I was college, the combination of negligence, pollution and unstable adolescent hormones basically spelled disaster for me. Apart from having a Pond's powder compact, I didn't know anything about affordable makeup or skin care at that point. And when you're young and still unsure of yourself, a bad breakout can be a blow to your confidence.

While 90s kids are still hoping for another Spice Girls reunion (will they or won’t they?), one thing we can definitely look forward to is adding a little Posh to our makeup collection. No more excuses for dirty brushes

Sigma is known for their high quality and luxurious brushes and brush sets. They also became (in)famous for the making the brush-cleaning glove: a giant, hot pink plastic that looked like a kitchen accessory, with a price tag that made a lot of eyes bulge. If you’re unwilling to drop $39 for a simple tool, there’s a new brush cleaner in town and it’ll cost you less than $10!

Practk, a sister brand of Sigma Beauty, just launched their Palmat - the cutest, most compact, and easy way to clean your brushes! Made of high-grade silicone, the mat is built to last years of keeping your tools goop-free. It even includes suction cups to anchor it to your sink, and a palm strap to keep it from slipping from your grip. Looks pretty nifty, and we certainly won’t have an excuse from skipping on this weekly chore!

Staff Picks: Our favorite beauty finds at the supermarket

$

Makeup retail therapy is always a treat for us PV beauty fiends but when we don't have time to drop by our favorite makeup haunts, we satisfy our beauty cravings when we do the weekly groceries! Aside from carrying affordable toiletries, supermarkets often have amazing beauty products for your whole body. If you're a busy gal or a mom who can only shop with her kids, check out these surprising treasures the next time you need to restock your pantry!

Liz: Y'all already know how much I LOVE Head & Shoulders shampoo, Pantene 3-Minute Miracle Conditioner, and Kojie San soap. I always stock up on these at the supermarket! I also keep backups because I'd hate to run out. What some may not know yet though is that one of my favorite beauty buys is - are you ready - toothpaste. Yes, toothpaste. I've finally found one that doesn't break me out on my chin! I always have these bumps around my mouth which aren't always visible but they bother me so darn much.

Well, ever since I stumbled upon the Colgate Toothpaste with Sugar Acid Neutralizer I've stopped having that problem. I swear. This is the best toothpaste for my skin! I get pimples within a few days of using any other toothpaste (even the ones from Colgate too - I'm looking at you, Charcoal variant! You suck!) so I know the Sugar Acid Neutralizer toothpaste doesn't make my skin react. So yes I will consider it as a beauty product na rin!

Den: My dry skin makes me prone to having a dull and ashy complexion but my current fave facial wash, Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal, has been great for keeping my skin bright and healthy-looking! I also recently bought a new pack Kojie-san soaps because I've found them to be a great (and easy to use) exfoliant but I'm not a fan of the smell, so I mix a bit of Ivory Aloe Liquid Soap for a delicate, clean scent. I've taken to adding toners to my skin care regimen (I used to think I didn't need it) and I prefer to use cotton squares to swipe them on.

Marielle: I do most of my beauty shopping at drugstores now but I still pick up feminine wash and bath soap when I'm at the grocery. I'm currently using Lactacyd and the new Olay Skin Whitening Bar. The soap smells nice, while I like the lather I get from Lactacyd.

Stacie: Since reading Liz’s review and getting recommendations from friends, Kojie-san Kojic Acid Skin Lightening Soap has been a staple in my shower. I use it to even out the color of my knees and elbows. Plus, my friends swear that kojic acid has antibacterial properties and has helped them reduce body acne!

Charlie: Having oily skin, I'm constantly in search for powders that will help keep unwanted shine at bay. I prefer bottled loose powders like the ones for babies because they're easier to apply. I've been loving Tiny Buds Rice Baby Powder, which I chanced upon at the supermarket. In my experience, it's better in the oil control department (probably because of the rice's oil-absorbing properties) compared to other powders and since it's intended for babies, it's hypoallergenic. Plus, I can use it whenever I have rashes on my back.

Crystal: I can't believe I took so long to try the Pantene 3-Minute Miracle but I'm glad I finally did. My hair is so much softer and silkier with this! It works better than some of the more expensive conditioners I've tried.

Gett: I consistently repurchase Head and Shoulders shampoo, particularly the Mint and Apple variants. H&S gives my scalp a clean feeling even after a long day of sweat and grime. I also stock up on cotton pads because I find that they remove makeup and apply skincare more efficiently because of the flat surface.

Claire: If there's one thing I can't stand, it's my face oiling up! Wearing primers and setting with powder definitely help, but that shine never fails to come through no matter what I do (holla at my oily/combi gals out there!) So I always have blotting sheets with me and at my vanity, plus backups at home and in the office. I prefer the film type that turns sheer once it absorbs oil. I know it's a bit gross, but I get such satisfaction when I see that mess on the sheet instead of on my face. I like Gatsby Oil Clear Sheets because they're black and unscented.

Do you stock up on beauty faves while doing the groceries? What products are constantly on your to-buy list?

Skincare Q: Should you use products from just one line or brand?

$
0
0

Most big skincare brands have more than one complete line of products for specific skin concerns. Whether it's brightening, pore clearing, acne fighting, or anti-aging (to name a few), skincare companies are more than willing to supply. But does it matter whether you use products from just one line or brand? Or is it ok to mix and match different products for different skin concerns?

Short answer: it is totally okay to mix and match your skincare. As long as the formulations work for you and don't negate the efficacy of the "team" so to speak (eg. you can't mix AHA with Vitamin C, you can't use retinoids without sunscreen), then it shouldn't be a problem whether you're using a moisturizer from Kiehl's with a serum from Clinique. There is only one goal and that is to get your skin as bright and healthy as possible. If different brands get you there then by all means, stick to what is effective.

If you want to try the Nuxe line, you can get these samples with our Wanderlust Kit at the Project Vanity Store.

If you want to try the Nuxe line, you can get these samples with our Wanderlust Kit at the Project Vanity Store.

On the other hand, there is value in using skincare from the same line. For example, if you're fighting acne and want a good but safe dose of salicylic acid in your daily routine, you'd benefit from using skincare that features it as an active ingredient. You can hunt down other products of course, but naturally the level and quality of the active ingredients may vary brand to brand. If you use just one line from one brand that you're already happy with, then it simplifies the process. The products work optimally together (assuming they are formulated well) and infuses your skin with the correct level of actives per stage in your routine.

One other (small) benefit is that using products from the same line is a more pleasant experience. For example, I adore how Origins products smell and feel on my skin, so I love using them together since I feel more relaxed afterwards.

In the eight years I've been writing about beauty, I've had experience mixing and matching different skincare, as well as using just one line consistently for a long time. What kind of routine worked better for me? I wouldn't say one worked better than the other - generally. But I have to specifically mention that Shiseido products work exceptionally well together, even more so when they're from the same line. The Ibuki and White Lucent line are top notch! Whenever I want to have my skin to have that petal-y effect favored by the Japanese, I just use these lines for a while.

It all comes down to preference and what works for you. I know it's a bitch to experiment with so many different skincare but the pay off is worth it once you find the mix that helps your skin be its best version! My advice is to simplify your process. If you love one product from a certain line, there is a good chance you will like the other products in that line. ;)

Try these heatless curls using nothing but paper

$

They say you always want what you can’t have. As a young girl with straight, limp hair, I wanted bombshell curls but there was no way in hell my mom would let me damage my hair with a bad perm (bless her heart)! My mom’s not the kikay type either, so we didn’t really have any heat styling tools at home. The curly hair I so wanted remained just a distant dream until a friend taught me this Paper Curling Technique. If you feel like playing with your hair without the damage, here's how!

Step 1: Cut bond paper (or any clean paper) into 16 narrow strips. Dampen hair just a tiny bit and divide into two upper and lower sections.

Step 2: Take a little section of hair and wrap it with the strip of paper to make a V-shape. Roll the hair around the middle of the V until you get to the roots. Take both ends of the paper strip and tie a knot. This is how it should look like when it’s done.

Step 3: Now working on the top half, divide it along the natural part of the hair and repeat the process. Once you’ve got all the hair covered, it basically looks like you have a weird head full of mini doughnuts!

Step 4: You have the choice of waiting until the hair dries to take it out, but for the longevity of the curls, it’s better to sleep on this weird hairdo. Just do this after you shower and before you go to bed. It’s not too uncomfortable to sleep on since you’re just using paper.

Step 5: Once you’re ready to reveal your new 'do, untie and unroll the papers one by one. It's soooo satisfying to see the strips get out of your hair! It's also amazing to achieve messy curls without the damage and at practically no cost (except time).

Unraveled

Unraveled

Styled

Styled

To loosen the curls, just slightly pull them down repeatedly and gently run your fingers through your locks. You can style your hair according to your preference. I just did a simple top knot on my sister’s hair.

This is the final look! How long the curls last depend on your hair type, and you can prolong it further by spritzing on some hair spray. If I don’t wash my hair, I can even get away with second day curls that are more loose and messy (in a good way). Extra tip: try to get the hair curled in the paper up to the tips, to get wavy tips instead of them falling straight as in below.

Is this the first time that you’ve come across this technique? Let us know what you think of this tutorial in the comments below either way!

The three bad beauty habits that make you sick (and your makeup filthy)

by Claire Reyes, contributor

Feeling under the weather but have no idea why? If you think you’ve covered all the bases by showering daily, taking your vitamins, and washing your hands regularly - think again. We do so many things to keep those dreaded germs and bacteria away, but those culprits for disease may be lurking in our favorite beauty products!

Don’t freak out but these micro-organisms are everywhere, even on stuff that look clean. Not all of them are harmful but those that are can cause anything from eye infections to cold sores, or even a nasty cold! We may not even realize that our love for makeup can increase our exposure to these disease carriers. Are you guilty of these bad beauty habits?

Bad Beauty Habit #1: Using makeup testers directly on your face

Understandably, shoppers want to try products first before buying. The problem is, we have no idea how long those testers have been sitting out in the open or if people washed their hands before coming into contact with the products (they probably didn’t). Yes, we all love going on a swatchfest but it's not worth risking your health over. Here's what you should do instead:

  • Always wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer before and after doing a beauty run.
  • Never ever use the testers directly on your face, particularly for eye and lip products. Swipe it on your finger instead and hold it up against the area to help you visualize how it would look on you. If you really want to try it on your face, ask the SA to sanitize the cosmetics.
  • Bring isopropyl alcohol (at least 70% solution) or anti-bacterial wipes to disinfect surfaces. For powder and cream-stick products, wipe off the surface with the alcohol (on a tissue or cotton ball) to disinfect and take off the topmost layer. Liquids and creams in jars cannot be disinfected so give those a hard pass.
  • Never use applicators on display unless you’re sure they’ve been disinfected. Your sanitized fingers are a safer option. If the SA offers you a free makeover, request for disposable applicators or make sure that the brushes are cleaned first.
  • Your safest bets would be products that are dispensed by pump or squeeze tube. Just wipe off the tip first.
  • If possible, try to get samples to use at home. Bring a small jar if the brand doesn't have ready samples to give away.

Bad Beauty Habit #2: Sharing makeup with both friends and strangers

Trooping to the comfort room with your girlfriends or touching up your lipstick after a meal gives you a peek at your BFF's current HGs. You may have compared and admired items from each other's kikay kits, and perhaps even asked to try it on (it would be really rude to swatch without their consent!) Even if we’re aware of the health risks, we still end up sharing our makeup when asked. You wouldn’t want to be labeled selfish or paranoid over such a small thing but whenever you do so, you also share microbes and that's hardly a nice thing to do.

The same happens whenever you buy or sell used makeup - it doesn’t matter if they’re “gently loved” or simply “swatched.” As long as a product has been opened, you can’t be totally sure it’s completely clean. The makeup may not have been used but it could have been sneezed at (ick) or exposed to household pets. Even if you do know the seller well, you just might be getting more than what you bargained for! Here's what you should do to keep safe:

  • Sanitizing is part of the solution. Do it before and after sharing makeup. When asking permission to swatch, make sure to specify where you're applying the product exactly then clean it off after use.
  • If you're borrowing makeup as part of your look (like for a special occasion), make sure to use your own clean brushes and applicators, or disposable ones.
  • Avoid purchasing used makeup that are impossible to sanitize, like liquid lipsticks, lip glosses, and mascara. Yes, it’s possible to sanitize the applicators but it contaminated everything else when it comes in contact with the product contents. Remember: moisture is a breeding ground for germs and bacteria so if you must insist, buy at your own risk.
  • Check all the details of the product you plan on buying: authenticity, batch codes, expiration dates, and any damage to the packaging (cracks and holes can expose the product to pathogens).

Bad Beauty Habit #3: The tiny thoughtless things we do

Yes, you might be putting yourself at risk with ~small~ things you don't really think about.

  • Do you pump your mascara wand instead of swirling it around in the tube?
  • Do you forget to wash your hands before doing your skin care or makeup routine? Do you keep beauty products well after their expiry dates
  • Do you neglect to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough while applying makeup?
  • And here’s a killer: do you use your makeup when you're sick?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you’re inadvertently causing bacteria growth in your cosmetics. Keep your makeup germ-free to safeguard your health and prolong product shelf life with these tips:

  • Always be mindful of everything that touches your cosmetics: brushes, sponges, other tools, and your fingers. Clean your tools properly and regularly (even with a DIY brush cleaner recipe). Cleanse your hands thoroughly before handling skin care and makeup products.
  • After eating, wipe your mouth properly before reapplying lip products. You really don't want to find food particles stuck in your expensive lippie!
  • Sanitize your cosmetics regularly. Products like the Beauty So Clean Cosmetic Sanitizer Mist and Cosmetic Sanitizer Wipes (available from Zalora) are pretty nifty, or stock up on 70% isopropyl alcohol.
  • If you can get away with it, don’t use your makeup when you have a communicable disease like cough, colds, cold sores or sore eyes. If you really really have to, stick to products that can be dispensed with pumps. Otherwise, use a clean spatula to get enough product to use and avoid double-dipping.
  • Always be on the lookout for any changes in your makeup products. If it changes color, texture, or starts to smell funky, throw it away. It’s just not worth the risk.

The truth is we can’t evade pathogens completely but we should do our best to minimize the risk of getting sick from them. Do you have other tips for keeping your beauty habit germ-free?

Budget Beauty: Our top recos for a complete drugstore makeup kit

One of the most common questions we get from readers is about building a budget makeup kit. Now we've answered this a few times before, but today's list of recommendations is updated and more complete in scope. It's everything you would need for a full look everyday (sans tools) and of course you can always trim it down or add depending on what you need.

If you're looking for brushes, we've listed down the best brush sets ever, five basic brushes that are a must in any collection, and makeup brushes/sets under P500.

Everything in this list is less than P800, with an average price of about P500. I wouldn't say these are the cheapest drugstore products around but in my experience they perform pretty well for the price. So! Let's get started!

Drugstore bases are getting better and cheaper than ever. The Maybelline Super BB Cushion (P749) for example provides good coverage while packing in SPF29 PA+++. It's one of the cheapest cushions available, and like its brethren, is a great way to apply liquid foundation without the hassle. It's the quickest way to even out your skin tone while providing a natural finish! You can also use it to subtly brighten the under eyes so there's no need for a separate concealer.

If you have any remaining marks, spot conceal with the Pink Sugar Our Lil Secret Concealer (P299). The whole Project Vanity team loves this because of the super heavy coverage and all-day staying power! Then, set and retouch your base as needed with the new  L'Oreal True Match Micro Perfecting Foundation (P600). It's a super fine powder that doesn't look thick or cakey. It comes in a lot of yellow-toned shades too.

Pretty eyes that don't fall apart after a few hours is non-negotiable. Get subtle but defined brows with the Holika Holika Wonder Drawing Eyebrow (P385). This automatic pencil has a fine tip that can draw natural-looking hair, so my brows look real even though I've filled them in quite a bit. I also highly recommend the Maybelline Hypersharp Liner (P378) since it sticks well and can be layered to get a darker, more dramatic effect. So easy to use too, once you get the hang of the brush!

The Max Factor Velvet Volume Mascara (P765) is my current fave daily mascara. People say that Maybelline makes the best mascaras - and I'd agree they make fantastic ones - but I'd argue that Max Factor owns the distinction of making the BEST lash beautifiers around. Velvet Volume multiplies my lashes and makes them fan out so beautifully! It's not waterproof but it's highly water-resistant and thus, easy to remove. It doesn't smudge on me all day!

And now we come to my favorite part - color. To bring out the best glow of our skin, it's important to choose the right shades that won't compete with our undertone. Generally, warm colors look fantastic on any skin tone. The Sleek Matte Me Lip Cream in Bittersweet (P450) is a brown-based peachy pink that's always sold out because it's so flattering. Match it with a classic blush like the Cover Girl Cheekers Blush in Pretty Peach (P395) - it creates this beautiful sheer skin-like flush!

If you are an eyeshadow lover or want to begin learning about it, you can't do better than the Pink Sugar Eye Candy Palette (P699). This is, as far as I'm aware, the best drugstore eyeshadow palette available in PH. You'll see how abused my own palette is! Colors are excellently chosen (they are very close dupes of MAC's best-selling eyeshadows) and are so, so pigmented. I swatched three of my fave colors - a duochrome peachy pink, a warm medium bronze, and a deep purply brown so you can see what I mean. The charcoal brown on the bottom right corner is excellent for applying eyeliner or layering on top of liner.

I hope you enjoyed my recos for a full drugstore makeup kit! Isn't it better when everything's complete? DIY a solid version of your favorite perfume. It's ridiculously easy!

A great perfume is a staple in our beauty stash. Not only do the bottles prettify our vanities; a spritz or two can instantly refresh us and perk up our mood! Sadly, some fragrances just don’t last the entire day. A lot of factors determine how long a perfume lasts but even the best of them can easily disappear while battling our daily commute. The solution: bring our favorite scent along and reapply on the go!

It might not be practical, however, to tote an entire glass bottle in our purses (they can be heavy and we risk having them shatter along the way). We can decant the perfume into a container like the Travalo spray to keep it travel-friendly; it's easy and won't take more than a couple of minutes to do.

But since we're ~$fancy$~, we decided to make our own solid perfume! It's a great way to make scents portable, plus we never have to worry about breakage, spilling or adhering to restrictions like TSA guidelines. Best of all, we can easily make one of our favorite scent or create our own blend! Here's how.

What you’ll need:

  • Your fragrance of choice: concentrated formulas like eau de parfums and oils will definitely last longer than colognes, eau de toilettes or body sprays
  • Beeswax: you can buy this from soap crafting stores or use an unscented (or barely scented) beeswax-based lip balm that you already have on hand. You only need around a couple of centimeters from the tube to fill up half a 4ml container.
  • Measuring container, dropper, funnel: you can find plastic accessories in department stores or Daiso, while we got the measuring container from Beabi (P30 only)
  • Portable container: choose one that's sturdy enough to withstand being jostled and banging against other items in your bag. We found a 4ml aluminum cream jar from Beabi (P30) or you can recycle tins or acrylic jars from used up beauty products. Just be careful as the mixture will be hot and might melt the material.
  • Microwave-safe containers: for heating up the wax
  • Toothpicks or spatula: to mix up the concoction and smoothen out the balm

Step 1: Cut around 3cm from your lip balm and place it in a microwave-safe container.

Step 2: Prepare your scent of choice by decanting around 3ml into the measuring container. We used a proportion of 1cm of lip balm to 1ml of perfume for this DIY but this may vary according to the intensity of the scent you use.*

Step 3: Heat up the lip balm in the microwave. Use short increments (less than 10 seconds each) until fully melted. Observe closely to avoid burning the wax. Transfer the melted wax into your container.

Step 4: Combine the melted wax and decanted perfume. Stir until fully blended.

Step 5: Allow the mixture to cool and set for at least 30 minutes before enjoying your new pot of DIY solid perfume!

Note: The proportions we noted worked for the products we used but different waxes and scents will react differently. We recommend working with a small amount first and testing your proportions first to avoid potential wastage.

For the batch that we whipped up, we've noticed that the scent lasted longer compared to simply spraying the perfume on! It's because the balm doesn't evaporate as quickly as a liquid, so the perfume oil remains with it. You can even make the fragrance last all day by applying the solid version first then spritzing the perfume on it. Apply sparingly though as the scent may become too overwhelming!

Will you be trying out this DIY? Which of your scents will you be putting into your solid perfume?

What my skin looks like after three weeks of the Origins Original Skin line

Have you had your quarter life crisis? I didn't use to believe in it, but an acquaintance of mine wisely explained it before - almost prophetically. He said that a crisis happens in our lives every seven years. When we're seven, we start to comprehend the world and process experiences in a manner more independent of our parents. When we're 14, we're rocked by the massive changes puberty brings to our bodies and our lives. When we're 21, we're thrust into the complexities of the adult world. When we're 28, we start to get burned out and wonder: is this all?

I am 28 this year, and a few months before my birthday I was at the cusp of making a decision that will put me on the path I am on currently. Was it time to take a full time job and give up blogging? Should I open a digital PR agency? Or should I scale up my one true passion, Project Vanity, and open a beauty start up company? I did a lot of traveling last year, thinking about what to do. It's cliche I know! Cue the montage, dammit! But I was in Tokyo when I realized that what I wanted, more than anything else in the world, is to do what means most to me. I don't have wild dreams of being filthy rich or famous, but I want to be able to push the idea to more women that they can be beautiful by their own definition, in their own terms.

And so here we are. Life's a lot harder than before and I am under so much stress I can't even begin to describe it, but I can't imagine myself doing anything else.

I mention stress because honestly, it's been showing on my skin. My skin is just on this tightrope where a small misstep can cause me at the least this annoying dullness, and at worst a full break out that leaves scars. Sigh. Some weeks I have really good skin. Some days it's like I can't seem to do anything right!

Now recently I've been trying out the Origins Original Skin line. The kind folks from the brand sent over their best-selling Retexturizing Mask with Rose Clay, the Renewal Serum with Willow Herb, and the newest addition, the Essence Lotion with Dual Ferment Complex. I've been using these for three weeks now and they're so good! Now y'all know that I love Origins. I am hiyang with everything of theirs that I've used so far, and the Original Skin line continues the winning streak.

After cleansing, I would use the Retexturizing Mask one to two times a week. It's a clay mask that promises to brighten with Mediterranean rose clay and exoliate with jojoba beads. It's a pretty pink color that feels powdery when dry. There is a tight feeling after washing it off (I need to be patient with this as it can be stubborn to remove) but it doesn't bother me. My skin looks matte and tight immediately!

If I'm not masking for the day, I use the Essence Lotion right after my facial wash. This smells fantastic! It has an effervescent citrus floral scent that makes me feel kilig whenever I smell it. If you're not into scented skincare this won't be your thing, but I personally prefer a good scent. It helps me with the mood - a small lift, granted, but it helps me feel less stressed.

This essence has a gel-like texture. I pat it on my face and it dries fairly quickly while leaving my skin moisturized. I feel it contributes to brighter looking yet matte skin.

Finally, I finish the routine with the Renewal Serum. This smells like the Essence lotion but has less of the citrus notes. Still smells great though! It's a lightweight serum that sinks into my skin immediately and goes well under makeup. I feel it brightens and smoothens my skin, again while providing a matte finish.

A few more observations: the Original Skin line goes well under makeup; the serum even feels a bit primer-y though it can be definitely used at night. These are recommended for all skin types, but I have noticed I don't get as oily in the last three weeks I've been using them. I suppose this is because of their light, easily absorbed textures, and of course the regular use of a clay mask removes excess oil and clears pore blockage.

What my skin looks like after three weeks of the Origins Original Skin line. It looks matte but not dull! I love the clarity I was able to achieve with it.

Overall, I recommend the Origins Original Skin to anybody who loves great-smelling skincare that goes well under makeup and doesn't feel oily at all. It provides just the right amount of moisture for normal to combination skin! At night I would maybe add a facial oil or night cream after just to get more of a boost but during the day, the essence and serum (plus sunscreen) are more than enough.

Let me know what you think! ^_^

Pop X Beauty: Makeup collabs with onscreen faves

Makeup brands have been doing collaborations with celebrities and fashion icons since forever, but there's something extra special about doing one with movies, TV shows and other hallmarks of pop culture. They become part of the narrative, and allow us to somehow be take part in the story, too!

Part of the thrill, of course, is the overall ephemeral feel of everything, the knowing that this collection won't be available forever. Here are five pop culture and beauty collaborations that we love best!

MAC Venomous Villains

While MAC is known for their high-profile (Mariah Carey, Caitlyn Jenner, Dita von Teese) and frequent (there's a new one at least once a month) collaborations, I can immediately pinpoint my favorite. I remember seeing this collaboration with Disney and just losing it. And I wasn't the only one; Venomous Villains created a social media frenzy and set the bar high up for future MAC x Disney collaborations.

The collection featured rich and interesting color choices inspired by iconic Disney villains who were sinister but also captivating in their own way. I've personally always been interested in the (untold) stories of Cruella De Vil and the Evil Queen/Snow White's stepmother but regardless of how you feel about these characters, the makeup here will make your heart stop. The eyeshadow picks for Maleficent are particularly gorgeous!

A’PIEU x Doraemon

We all know that one of the main selling points for Korean cosmetic products is the cute packaging but this collab opted to put a nostalgic spin on it! Korean cosmetic brand A’Pieu brought us a Doraemon inspired makeup collection that is as adorable as it is functional. This ultra-wearable collection was originally comprised of six lip tints, two eyeshadow palettes, two cushion blushes, a bronzer, a primer, and a BB cream - you'd need his magic backpack to store all that!

With foolproof colors and high-performing formulas, the products easily found its way to many a Kbeauty lover's daily makeup routine. The collaboration garnered such a warm reception that the brand made Doraemon a recurring character in other capsule collections, from eyeshadow duos to a special Christmas scented candle!

CreerBeaute x Sailor Moon

Japanese cosmetic brand CreerBeaute is known for their anime aesthetic, and they went viral when photos of their Sailor Moon eyeliner collection first made rounds on social media. It seemed only fitting the iconic wands/weapons used by the characters could now be part of a makeup junkie's arsenal!

Though they look somewhat like toys, these liners are legit. Available in both pencil and brushpen form, the formulas are smudgeproof and waterproof! The decorative top is actually detachable and fits some caps of other products so you can continue to "right wrongs and triumph over evil" long after your liner is used up.

Urban Decay x Through the Looking Glass

The much awaited Alice in the Wonderland sequel Through the Looking Glass was finally released this summer, and if you marveled at the colorful visuals, you'll love this collaboration between Disney and Urban Decay! Drawing inspiration from their original Alice in the Wonderland palette back in 2010, this capsule collection is comprised of an eyeshadow palette encased in a beautiful pop-up art box and an array of vividly colored lipsticks inspired by the characters in the film.

All 20 colors from the eyeshadow palette are new and created specifically for this collection. It has a great mix of wearable neutrals and vibrant colors for more creative looks, so we've got a mad lemming for this one!

Cover Girl x Star Wars

When you hear Cover Girl, you probably think of flawless bases, believable blushes, and lots of eyelashes, with the Lash Blast line being one of products the American brand has been known for. The vibe is very girl-next-door with a touch of glam. So it was a pleasant surprise when in 2015, amidst all the social media frenzy over the Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Cover Girl announced a collection inspired by this film. They commissioned the celebrated makeup artist Pat McGrath, a big Star Wars fan, to do the makeup for the campaign using products from the line and the result was a deviation from the fresh-faced beauty featured in Cover Girl's campaign.

Image via Cover Girl

The collection is comprised of lipsticks, mascaras and nail varnishes bearing an iconic Star Wars quote on its packaging. What I loved about this collaboration, despite never having seen a single Star Wars film (go ahead, crucify me), is that the concept was wonderfully rendered and that the looks were neither campy nor costume-y. Besides, how can you say no to those stunning lipstick shades?

What do you think about pop culture and beauty collaborations? Are they worth the hype for you? Which ones are your faves?

Review+ swatches: Your first exclusive look at the new Kanebo

Kanebo is a heritage beauty brand that's been around for 80 years. It actually started as a business which produced silk thread in 1906 before releasing its first beauty product, a facial soap named Savon De Soie, in 1936. During its rich and recently, heavily embattled history, it has created unforgettable brands like Lunasol, Impress, Freshel, Kate Tokyo, and Sensai, which caters to markets with different budgets. Today it is one of the top Japanese cosmetics conglomerates in the world, and is available in over 50 countries and regions.

Recently, Kanebo has announced a surprising development: they have effected a total makeover of their 80-year old brand. They are now going for a younger, more modern look, starting with choosing supermodel Arizona Muse as their new face. She dons a casual look with effortless makeup - more approachable, more cool but obviously elegant in all the ways that count. That is what Kanebo aspires to be today and they are definitely pulling it off!

Today I'd like to talk about some of Kanebo's latest products which are coming out in Japan on September 15. I've been using these for a couple of months and they are pretty good! They won't be out in the Philippines until November 2016, and yes, Lunasol will be phased out in PH in the process, but I think that the Kanebo cosmetics line could prove to be more exciting to makeup fans. Here's your first look into some of the products under the new Kanebo brand!

The Kanebo Dual Eye Liner is a double-ended liner with liquid and pencil tip. It's a simple idea, but it's genius. Why aren't there more brands doing this? I love using pencil liners to mattify and further intensify liquid liners, and I love using them separately to achieve different looks. These two liners don't budge or smudge on me. They are also pretty intense! Refills can be purchased for each tip so it's less expensive over time.

The Kanebo Pencil Eyebrow in 01 Neutral Gray is, for lack of a better term, perfect. It creates hairline strokes that look absolutely natural, and the spoolie! OMG. It's soft and plushy and is fatter in the middle to blend the makeup better. It's so good, I don't even need to layer products to micro-manage the shape of my brows! I will probably buy the refill when I'm out. It's just that good.

The Kanebo Selection Colors Eyeshadow in 01 Cool Monotone is a basic neutral palette for a daytime or smoky eye. It has a light taupe, a cool brown, a matte white, grey, and black included. Note that they won't be as pigmented as the American eyeshadows we're used to since Japanese eyeshadows are really meant to be subtle, but nonetheless they contour the eye beautifully with little fuss. The applicators are top notch; you won't even need brushes unless you insist upon it.

Finally, I've got the Kanebo Moisture Rouge in 05 Core Red. This is a juicy red that's great for everyday looks. I love how moisturizing it is and how well it sticks on the lips even so. It's a classic color with a comfortable formula that you can't go wrong with! The hefty packaging is so luxe, too.

Here's a look I did using the Neutral Black Liquid Liner, Cool Monotone palette, and Core Red lipstick. I did a smoky eye to show off the intensity that can be achieved with the colors. Hope you enjoyed this exclusive preview! <3 I think this is one of the first reviews online. Let me know what you think of Kanebo's bold move and if there's anything you're looking forward to see from them soon!

PS I have samples of their new glow primer and foundation and guys, if you love the dewy skin look, you're gonna love them too!
